Weld Racing is likely best known for their Drag Racing and Outlaw wheels, and one reason they are well known is because their wheels are built to handle the punishment that a hardcore racer puts his or her wheels through. So why not take that reputation to the dirt?
At this week’s SEMA show, Weld Racing did just that and introduced their line of one-piece forged wheels for the off-road market: Rekon. With a few styles to choose from, these wheels retain the high-tech machined look that is part of the Weld Wheels tradition, and also sport what is called their Advanced Tactical Coating (ATC) which helps to protect the wheels from the elements and keeps them looking great – even when they’re put through the dirt and gravel, mud and water, and whatever else you want to throw them at.
Nick Rickles, Product Engineer at Weld Racing, gave us some helpful tips on how to care for these wheels with the special coating. He said, “You really should stay away from any commercial wheel cleaner that states ‘good for all wheels’. There’s no telling how many acids are in those cleaners, and they even tell you not to leave it on for very long.”
He recommends using a soap and water cleaner only on these wheels, stating that if you keep them away from chemicals your wheels will retain the great look they were created with.
For now, the Rekon is only available for the Jeep JK and Ford Raptor, but Weld Racing VP of Marketing, Chris Bovis, said that they plan to extend coverage to other makes and models. The Rekon is available now, in both black/machined or fully polished surfaces, and they’re built to withstand whatever you’re willing to put your vehicle through.
