SEMA 2015: ATC’s Composite And Steel Bed Systems

For people who truly use their trucks for the intended purpose — such as hauling things in the bed — the need for products to keep trucks protected, and to make loading and unloading easier, are always paramount. ATC Truck Bed Systems recognizes this very point, and boasts a bevy of products from truck caps and lids to fully-featured bed systems — the latter of which ATC’s Brant Combs gave us a closer look at during our visit to the 2015 SEMA Show.

IMG_9740The first product we took a look at was ATC’s Composite Bed System. It is centered around a fiberglass construction of the deck and covered with a spray-on bedliner. According to Combs, the system will hold upwards of 1,200 pounds, much lighter than other similar products on the market.

“We also offer a no-drill installation, so a crossbar with brackets keeps you from having to drill any holes into your new truck. It does lower the weight rating some, as the ‘D’ rings only hold 800 pounds. But it does keep your truck like new,” says Combs. With a drilled installation, the Composite system can hold the full 1,200 pounds.

ATC also offers a complete steel bed system with steel tubing all the way around, and a diamond tread on top. The systems don’t require a tonneau cover or a cap — they can be exposed to the elements. As Combs shares, the steel bed systems are essentially a commercial application and can take a lot of abuse. They are rated at 1,500 pounds, and like the Composite system, can be installed in a drilled or no-drill fashion.

Says Combs, “Our beds are really smooth, and as far as operation goes, there is a rod through the middle that goes out to the cables and double pins. We have really heavy-duty pins we’ve engineered to last and stand up to a beating. They lock all the way in at the tailgate at an 80 percent extension. You can reach everything in your bed with this arrangement.”
