For Anthony Reams, a truck is not just a vehicle that hauls cargo around … it’s a means to having fun and getting the adrenaline flowing. His 1995 Dodge Ram has come a long way from its days as a stock pickup, and continues to impress and thrill crowds at various drag racing events. We spoke with Reams to get a better understanding of the man, the machine, and the motivation that keeps everything on the fast track.

“Motorsports in general is just a love of mine that I’ve always had,” said Reams. “I spent some time early on in life racing quads. As I grew older, I had other motorsports things I wanted to try out. That led me to diesel sled pulling then on to what I’m doing now, diesel drag racing.”

In the early 2000s, Reams had friends that owned diesels and got him involved in the culture. He went to work for AirDog in 2007 and later joined with XDP, where he currently works. He went hard and heavy into diesels, fixing them up for competition and peak performance. The aforementioned ’95 Dodge Ram gets the job done nowadays, and came into Reams’ ownership circa late 2013.

“I began thrashing on it very hard in order to compete in the 2014 season,” said Reams. “The need for speed is something I’ve always had with motorsports. So that alone inspired me to really make this truck something more than just a regular old hopped-up diesel. I wanted it to be unique in some way to catch attention, so the goal of running nine-second passes in a 6,000-pound leaf sprung four-wheel-drive was set.”

Reams kept the frame and body the same, but went to town under the hood. He installed a 1,300-horsepower 12-valve Cummins from Shiver Diesel, a 13mm Northeast Diesel injection pump, Dynomite Diesel injectors, Hamilton camshaft, MBRP exhaust, Edge CTS programmer, Nitrous Express dual stage kit, Joker’s Fab intake, and last but not least, a set of three Borg Warner turbochargers – two 75mm and one 91mm.

“Borg Warner turbos have been a HUGE difference in our performance and accomplishments,” said Reams. “We put our heads together to get a good starting point and work our way in to the perfect fitment of turbos throughout the year. Doing that, we have cut nearly .5 seconds off of our quarter-mile times! This year will be no different. We have a pretty radical Borg Warner triple turbo setup we will be running that will help us reach the goals we set out for.”

2016 is looking like it will be a landmark year for Reams and his truck. Other than the body, nothing will be the same as he sets about a fresh makeover of the Dodge Ram. “We have set the bar high for ourselves and hope to be the first super street truck to run 9.0 seconds or faster in the quarter-mile.”
