In the early 1980s American automakers briefly flirted with the idea of offering more diesel engines to the buying public. Unfortunately, the technology just wasn’t up to par with consumer expectations, resulting in woefully underpowered and unreliable motors like the Olds 350 diesel with a mere 125 hp and a reputation for chewing through crankshafts.

These motors found their way into Cadillacs as well. The loud, smoky affair didn’t last long, though Automotive News reports that diesel motors will be returning to the luxury automaker, if its new CEO Johan de Nysschen has any say. According to de Nysschen, Cadillac will “definitely” offer diesel engines in the near future, possibly as soon as 2019. Just don’t expect these diesels to pack eight cylinders.

Rather, in a bid to keep up with stricter emissions and fuel economy standards, de Nysschen wants to kick things off in Europe with four and six-cylinder turbodiesels for the luxury brand’s smaller models. Diesel engines are particularly popular in Europe, where the fuel tends to be cheaper and the public is more fond of the diesel engine’s efficiency compared to most gas engines. There’s also a lot more torque to play with as an added benefit.

After debuting in Europe though, Cadillac will “definitely bring them to the U.S.” de Nysschen told Automotive News. This will bring Cadillac on par with other contemporary luxury rivals like Audi and BMW, two German companies that have launched a diesel marketing blitzkrieg in America…and it seems to be working. Diesel car sales were up over 13-percent in 2014 compared to the year before, and GM already offers cars like the Chevy Cruze Diesel, along with plans to bring a four-cylinder diesel motor to its new Chevy Colorado pickup.

But will Cadillac buyers get on the diesel hype train, or should GM’s luxury marque be focusing its efforts on other fuel-saving technologies?
