Diesels On The Web, Issue #2

DOTW2 [1]

Welcome back to Diesels On The Web, where we look around the internet for what’s cooking with regard to diesel. From general topics to videos to forums and more, we invite you to get a quick peek at how diesel showed up on the information superhighway this week.

Whatever your take is on the effects of biodiesel, there are still plenty of automotive enthusiasts out there that think it’s the way to go for their vehicle. Over on Reddit [3], user simenfiber was keen about sharing the details of his recent build [4] – a 1994 Euro-spec Toyota 4Runner [5] converted to run on waste vegetable oil, or WVO for short.

“Our 1994 4Runner just underwent some conversion therapy at a shop in Denmark,” said simenfiber. “Weaning her off the dinosaur juice and onto waste vegetable oil was a two-day process in the capable hands of Niels AnsjΓΈ at www.dajolka.net [6]. The conversion involved new injectors, glow plugs, a feed pump, a heated fuel filter with thermostat, and a heat exchanger. Mileage at the time of conversion was 260k miles. MPG in the 25s. I’m looking forward to many miles of carbon-neutral travels.”

Reddit user simenfiber was running on a single-tank, single-fuel setup. Others were saying this was a bad idea, as running on strictly biodiesel would eventually gum up the fueling system. [7]

The build was shared on both the diesel and 4Runner subreddits, but came under fire quickly. Choosing to run the 4Runner on biodiesel on a single-tank setup, as opposed to running it on both biodiesel and regular diesel on a two-tank setup, was unwise according to one Redditor, johnson56.

“The two tank system allows you to start up the vehicle on diesel, so easier starts,” said johnson56. “Then when the engine is warm, you can switch to vegetable oil. Then at the end of the drive, you can switch back to diesel to purge the vegetable oil from the injectors and other fuel system components that shouldn’t have vegetable oil in them all the time.Β This is EXTREMELY important in cold environments, especially in temps below about 10 [degrees Celsius].”

Diesel trucks have certianly found a fandom foothold on Instagram [8]. Here are a few recent posts that really got our motors running.
