A number of complaints on diesel truck forums, as well as to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA [2]), have caused FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) to voluntarily issue a recall to all owners of 2014 and 2015 Ram [3] 1500 pickup trucks powered by the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine.

FCA tested the levels of carbon monoxide and reported that it was below safety standards, but have reported the problem and initiated the recall. It can be viewed on the NHTSA’s Safercar.gov website [5].

According to the NHTSA approximately two million vehicles are recalled for emission-related violations ever year, but these emissions recalls are not considered “safety related.” All the repairs necessary under the recall will be free. FCA estimated that up to 3,000 vehicles could be recalled.

An FCA spokesman said in a statement, “Tests have confirmed there is no safety hazard. The issue is confined to a limited number of vehicles equipped with a certain driveline. We are responding to customer concerns in accordance with their best interests, and in full compliance with all applicable regulations. We value our customers and apologize for any inconvenience.”

If you own a 2014 or 2015 Ram pickup truck with the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine, and have not already received your recall notice, you should contact your nearest Ram truck dealer and make an appointment to have this cracked coupling repaired as soon as possible.
