It’s been another week of receiving some great new parts from aftermarket companies. Just recently, we were delivered a sweet performance kit from Snow Performance that will kick things up a notch on a Ford Super Duty.

The kit is called Power-Max (PN 420) and will unlock that most intense of performance modifications to vehicles – water-methanol injection. First used during the interwar period to get airplanes an extra boost, it was expanded in World War II for use in aircraft with superchargers, which required a powerful fluid to make up for the less dense air at high altitude.

Our Power-Max kit will deliver a water-methanol fluid that will increase horsepower and fuel economy, while also lowering EGTs.

These days, water-methanol can be merged with forced induction (i.e. turbodiesel) vehicles to really ramp up the oomph factor. Talking with owner Jake Snow, we were walked through how water-methanol injection works its magic.

This is the optional seven-gallon reservoir that can be ordered for the kit. Snow Performance also offers a 10-gallon reservoir for even more water-methanol storage.

“The water and methanol cool the air charge and decrease the temperature of the exhaust fumes as it travels through the system,” said Snow. “This makes for lower EGTs. Also, the methanol breaks up diesel into smaller molecules than the diesel would be otherwise. This gets users less black smoke and more fuel economy, too. Lastly, methanol is a very powerful fuel, and that adds to horsepower and torque generated by the motor.”

Next, we discussed how the Power-Max does its job. “All of our Power-Max kits come with a fully adjustable, two-stage controller,” said Snow. “The power is in the user’s hands to determine when each stage turns on and off based on boost pressure, so once he dials down to the point of quench – overfueling the cylinder – and knows the baseline, he can then dial it up to wherever it reaches maximum power and work with that.”

The POWER-MAX kit has two progressive stages that can be adjusted to the user’s content. This will allow a lower and higher-volume spray of water-methanol fluid that correlates with the amount of boost pressure going into the engine.

We are forgetting something though, aren’t we? That’s right, the water-methanol mixture, of course. Asked for recommendations on where to get the fluid, Snow stated: “The best place to get water-methanol is from your local automotive parts store. Grab some windshield wiper fluid, which is made up of water, methanol, and dye. You should always use -20 blue windshield washer fluid, because it is a 33 percent methanol-to-water solution, and it’s phenomenal with cooling EGTs.”

But Snow Performance makes its very own fluid that packs an extra punch: Boost Juice. “Boost Juice is a 50-50 mix,” explained Snow. “It will mean more horsepower out of the diesel because of the increased methanol concentration.”
