If we play the word association game and I said Kohler, what would you think? For most people we think of a faucet. In fact, if we took that a step further, most would probably more specifically think of a kitchen or bathroom faucet.

In fact, Kohler manufactures a wide range of products including generators and engines. Yep, the same company that manufactures that bath tub for your wife, can build you an engine.

Back in November, Kohler introduced a new 3.4-liter diesel that kind of flew under the radar here in the United States. It was introduced in Bologna, Italy and then made another appearance in Bauma, China. Most of us didn’t hear about it, until today when they debuted it at the World of Concrete in Las Vegas, NV.

Are you thinking that this isn’t the typical debut for an engine like this? Well, it actually is because this isn’t for an over the road vehicle, it is for off road only use. Now before you click the big X and close this page, hear us out.

Even though the emissions requirements are much less for off road engines and many engines don’t have DPFs, not too many engines are able to produce up to 134 horsepower can qualify for Tear 4 emission without a DPF. This is what is so special. As more and more manufacturers continue to invest in new diesel technologies, we will see more and more engines come in without this power robbing, fuel sucking item.

As more technology is introduced, it will move further and further up the emission tiers until eventually, we hope not to see DPF’s at all. Now this isn’t something that will happen over the next five years, it could be something that happens over the next 15 or 20.
