Normally in a room full of diesel fanatics, such as those reading anything on this website, the mention of anything Toyota brings up images of puny trucks and or “that” hybrid. Now that Toyota is talking about a bringing a Cummins diesel into the Tundra in 2016 (see our article here on that development) the highest volume selling Japanese brand (I say brand, not truck, because the Tundra is built in Tennessee now), it may gain a bit more respect among coal rolling truck lovers.
However, that’s not what this video and story are about, although it does involve some Toyota trucks and SUVs of varying vintage and type. As a matter of fact, this tale that somewhat resembles that of David and Goliath involves 20 trucks and SUVS of the Toyota brand–and none of them are diesel (that we can tell from watching the video above). But, wait for it, the diesel engine part of this story that is pointedly relevant to the video you are about to view is the one in the Caterpillar D8 dozer.
The video was shot at an off-road event great that took place in Geilenkirchen, Germany, and it looks like these guys has one heck of a good time. According to the book “The Caterpillar Chronicle: The History Of The World’s Greatest Earthmovers”, the 1953 D8 mustered somewhere between 150 and 185 hp out that beefy D13000 series, a six-cylinder in-line diesel powerplant.
So who wins the tug-o-war between one Caterpillar D8 and 20 Toyotas? You’re just going to have to watch the video all the way through to find out. For a really good time, play this one for a bunch of friends, take bets, and see who loses some of their “beer” money.
