Ultimate Callout Challenge: Day 1 Recap

The floodgates to the 2018 Ultimate Callout Challenge are open in Indianapolis, Indiana with competitors filling the pit area of the historic Lucas Oil Raceway. Ever since the announcement of the of this event, drivers have teamed up with the best of help in preparation for this punishing competition. Now its time to see who can actually walk the walk versus talk the talk.

Obviously, it wouldn’t be an event without an appearance of the Wagler Competition Products/EZ LYNK team build “Screwed Coupe”. This blue beauty was catching eyes all day.

In this event, like years past, the top 30 trucks in the country battle it out in three events: drag racing, dyno, and sled pulling. Pulling the farthest or going the fastest won’t win you this event. It’s about who built the most consistent truck for all three events. Each event has a point system awarding each driver for their performance.

Unlike the previous two years of this grueling event, the Ultimate Callout Challenge crew decided to make things interesting. Not only did they have the top 30 trucks in the country, but they also invited 50 more drivers that are qualifiers for the 2019 event. These drivers are going to compete in the same three events and the top 10 reserve their spot in next year’s big show.

Although there was no Shown-N-Shine on Day 1, there were still plenty of trucks to gander at on this windy Friday afternoon.

Day one was the drag racing competition for the UCC competitors to see who could lay down the fastest elapsed time. For the UCC competitors, they started their long weekend with the dyno competition to see who could push their trucks to the limit on the rollers. What a wild day of competition. See below for the results of Day 1.

Day 1: Drag Racing UCC Drivers

Lavon Miller, after a few attempts and pushing through some struggles, made it all worth it after running a personal best on the blacktop. 7.88 seconds at 181-MPH — that’s a 4,500-pound rocket ship.

The top 10 runs were as follows:

  1. Lavon Miller, FirePunk – 7.88
  2. Jared Delekta, Industrial Injection- 8.076
  3. Chris Buhidar, Truck Source Diesel- 8.57
  4. Donovan Harris, Armor Inc/DDP- 8.581
  5. Josh Gruis, JAGS Pro Truck Shop- 8.748

  10. Anthony Reams, St. James Diesel- 9.06

Trevor Peterson showed up with a proven truck and he showed up on race day with a purpose. He got it done on Day 1 winning the dyno competition.

UCC Qualifier Top 10 Dyno Competition:

  9. Kyle Vlasak, Vlasak Performance, 1,286 HP/ 1,769 TQ
  10. Travis Trent, 1,259 HP/ 1,840 TQ

Although the day for Dmitri Millard was not what they anticipated, it's quite a different story for the crew at Industrial Injection. Shawn Baca, despite the rough go they had last year during the drag racing portion, still showed up and definitely showed out. He destroyed the truck's personal best elapsed time with a blistering 8.88 to the quarter-mile. This weekend's competition is stiff and will be down to the wire.

With Day 1 in the books, it’s time for everyone to prepare for the second day of competition. Day 2 will bring the dyno competition for the UCC drivers, while the UCC Qualifiers will take a stab at the dragstrip. Stay tuned for the same-day results right here on Diesel Army.
