There are certain tools that every shop or garage needs in order to wear the name. Otherwise, it’s just an area capable of housing a car. These are essential tools that get used almost everyday, not ones that get used once a month and idly sit in the tool box the remainder of the time; they never get a break. They’re the ones that get replaced most often because they get used.
Jegs has all the tools you need to make your garage a garage. All the tools you could ever need, and they’re just a click away.
Please Be Seated
One thing we’ve learned visiting various shops in our travels, is that many shops don’t have anywhere to sit. Of course, that is on purpose since they don’t want people just coming in and having a seat, and keeping the technicians from getting any work done. Shops don’t want people stopping by, and thinking it’s social hour. Therefore, that’s why many of them don’t have Jegs’ Creeper and Seat Sets ($83.99), but that shouldn’t stop us from having either in our home garage. We’re sure professional shops have a creeper, but they also have lifts so they don’t normally do a lot of crawling around.
A creeper makes it easy to slide under a car to get a closer look at your latest project from the ground. It keeps you from getting the back of your shirt dirty, and makes it easier to get under and out from under the car. The wheels on the bottom side of the creeper enables you to roll under and back out from under the car instead of scooting yourself along the garage floor. From a safety standpoint, a creeper is better to use since its wheels allow you to get out from under the car quicker than scooting along the floor. If you’re scooting yourself under and out from under the car, you’re most likely using a part of the car for leverage to do so. Therefore, from a safety standpoint, you run the risk of the car moving around, and if you haven’t covered the safety bases by using jack stands and a floor jack, then we have even bigger problems.
Jegs’ 42-inch creeper has an adjustable headrest so you can take a nap… I mean, adjust the neck area of the creeper to get a closer look at components without straining your neck muscles. The headrest features a three-position adjustment to get you closer to the action. This creeper has a max capacity of 350 pounds.
Just because every other shop doesn’t have a seat, that doesn’t mean your home garage can’t have one of Jegs’ air seats. We highly recommend having one, or seven for when all your buddies are over helping to work on your project car. These seats not only make it easier to accomplish tasks like brake jobs, wheel rotations, emblem replacement, and the like. Plus, when it comes time to take a break, you’ll also have a place to sit.
Jegs’ air seat has a 250 pound max capacity, and a five-inch travel adjustment to allow it to perform all tasks using one seat.
No, not Matt, Jegs’ Garage Guard Mat ($15.99). To go along with the creeper and seat set, Jegs’ garage guard mat is designed to make working under your car easier than it was before. If you have to roll around under your car, the mat will make it a more-tidy proposition. With a 36×60-inch size, it’s the perfect size to have under a wide variety of cars, and not only will it allow you to keep from rolling around on a dirty garage or shop floor, the mat also utilizes Oil-Dri Technology, making it capable of absorbing spills, leaks, and sprays that can permanently damage the floor of your garage or shop, or leave a lasting stain. With many older cars propensity for leaking rear main seals, power steering pumps, and rear transmission seals, Jegs Garage Guard Mat definitely needs to be on our garage wish list.
Well, at least from working in the garage that is. Jegs’ Pit Mat Kit ($45.98) is designed to save those old knees of yours when performing various jobs around the garage. Invariably, when working on a project car there will be times when you have to get on your knees to address a certain mechanical situation. Jegs’ Pit Mat can be used in other places, like out front in the driveway, or in an emergency situation on the side of the road. However, its primary use still takes place in the garage, where it can easily be stored, then pulled out when needed.
Since the mat has handles, and a 48×18-inch unfolded, and 24×18-inch folded size, it can be effectively stored in a variety of locations. And if you do have to make a road side repair, all you have to do is grab your portable tool box, and the mat, and be on your way. The Pit Mat also comes with a pair of LED safety glasses, designed to keep debris out of your eyes, and light up your work area while keeping both hands free to do the work.
Torque Moves You
A necessary tool for every car enthusiast’s shop is a torque wrench. And in this day of electronic gadgets, we ain’t got time for those old-school torque wrenches, we want something that has buttons, and that beeps at us. Jegs’ digital torque wrench ($124.99) is just what is needed. This torque wrench uses a Double Gear Sensing System, and also a microprocessor controlled 8-bit electronics for accurate readings, and that’s why we have a torque wrench in the first place; for its accuracy.
The 1/2-inch drive ratchet head torque wrench has a range of 15–150 ft-lbs, 180–1800 in-lbs, and 20.3–203 Nm; all in one torque wrench. The torque wrench has a backlit LED display, and a buzzer to let you know when the desired torque reading has been reached. If you forget to turn it off, it turns itself off, and it also warns you when it’s time to replace the torque wrench’s AA batteries, which aren’t included. That’s a torque wrench we want for our garage.
The last tool on this list is certainly not the least; it’s Jegs’ adjustable AN wrench ($47.99). AN wrenches -we’re sure if you have built even just one race car or project car, you have either one, or several. However, with this AN wrench, you have several AN wrenches in one. Now you don’t need the whole set, you only need this one. The CNC-machined billet aluminum is adjustable from -3 up to -12 AN aluminum fittings. If you have fuel system installs in your future, this adjustable AN wrench definitely needs to find its way into your garage.
Obviously, these aren’t all the tools Jegs has in its inventory, it’s just a small sample of what the mail-order giant has available. This is a list of tools we think would make your garage more functional, and able to tackle whatever install you choose to perform on your project.
