SEMA 2017: Cummins Offers A Badass 2.8-Liter Crate Engine

You’re out in the woods or rugged terrain, and the equipped engine on your Jeep or mini-truck just isn’t enough horsepower and torque that you wish it was. If only there was an easy fix that you could just swap into a diesel powerplant and have plenty of power for any of your off-road needs. Thanks to Cummins, there is.

Cummins showed off the R2.8-Liter Cummins turbo diesel engine which is a powerful 2.8-liter four-cylinder engine. It is targeted as a cleaner and more efficient alternative to many older original gasoline and diesel engines used in iconic small pickups, SUV’s, and 4×4’s that are beyond their useful life.

“The combination of low-end torque, low fuel consumption, low engine operating temperatures, modern high-pressure common rail fuel injection, and compact packaging makes the R2.8 turbo diesel the ideal engine to power your project wherever your adventure may take you,” said Stephen Sanders, of Cummins.

A lot of times we see vehicles on the street and think to ourselves, ‘that should’ve come factory with a diesel to begin with’, which is exactly what this engine targets. This engine isn’t just for show either as it makes 267 lb-ft torque and 167 horsepower all while weighing in at only 503 pounds, it also meets 1999 tailpipe emissions.

“This engine definitely has room for more, but our main focus was to meet emissions,” Sanders said. “We’re excited to see what the aftermarket does with these engines.” In the kit of this product are the engine, MAF tube, throttle pedal, wiring harness, ECM, front accessory drive, alternator, power steering pump, and enough room to add air conditioning if you chose.

For more information on the R2.8-Liter engine, be sure and check out their website. We’re ecstatic to see how this little engine does as well seeing what the aftermarket can make out of this. What are your thoughts on the R2.8-liter? Let us know in the comments below.
