Is Buying A 2018 Diesel Ford F-150 Really Worth The Price?

We already know how popular Ford’s 2018 lineup of trucks has been this year. So when it was first announced that the Blue Oval would be adding a new 3.0L V6 Power Stroke Turbo Diesel to the F-150 lineup and pairing it with the new 10r80 transmission, many truck enthusiasts welcomed the latest addition to the list with open arms.

But after taking a more in-depth look at what packages are available for the new turbo diesel engine, and more importantly, the hefty price tag, is it really a smart buy?

AmericanTrucks

Justin Dugan from AmericanTrucks got his hands on a brand new 2018 Ford F-150 Lariat SuperCrew to find out. In the video, Justin reviews the 2018 F-150 Diesel and compares it to the previous model design. He also pits it against their current shop truck, the 2018 F-150 STX.

“The new diesel F-150 is a great truck,” replied Justin. “Ford refined the traditionally noisy and dirty diesel powerplant and made version fitting of the ‘2018 Truck of the Year.'”

But as Justin dives deeper into the features of this truck, we begin to see that some areas may need to be considered before going out and purchasing one of these vehicles. Case in point: the F-150 packages that are available for the diesel variant. The 2018 diesel F-150 is only available in the Lariat, King Ranch, or Platinum packages, which most of us know raises the price point of your new F-150 substantially.

In fact, the Lariat version that Justin is driving in the video comes in at a heart-stopping $63k! While you are getting some premium perks with this package, the starting price tag still will set you back at least $46k, which may be a deterrent for some.

“However, one area that the diesel F-150 is a clear cut winner and, it’s not even close, is fuel economy,” explained Justin. “And this doesn’t come as much of a surprise because diesels just do a little better in this regard.”

But this would not be a proper AmercianTrucks new truck review without Justin strapping the turbo diesel on the dyno to see what type of power it puts down. While the turbo diesel’s 250 horsepower is nothing to write home about, the half-ton truck does put down an impressive torque rating of 440 ft-lb at 1,750 rpm. And when you combine that with the fuel economy of 25 mpg (22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway), you get a truck that we can easily see as your next daily driver/mobile workstation vehicle.

But what are your thoughts on Ford’s 3.0L V6 Power Stroke Turbo Diesel F-150? Is it worth the premium price tag? Let us know in the comments below.
