Improving Horsepower And Torque: An EFILive Story

In this day and age, tuning is everything. As enthusiasts, we are always looking for the newest way to improve the performance of our diesel trucks. EFILive offers a top-tier tuning platform for models like the 2001-16 Duramax and 2006-15 Dodge Cummins trucks, and they have no plan to stop with their top-tier technology.

EFILive’s AutoCal device is intended to provide a convenient platform for professional tuners to distribute custom tunes to their customers. It also allows customers to collect and submit logged data back to the tuner for analysis. From these data logs, the tuner can update and optimize the original tune without shipping or removing the controllers from customers’ vehicles.

With EFILive, you can get the most out of your engine, increasing horsepower, torque, and fuel mileage.

We wanted to speak with some of the shops in the industry to get their thoughts on this growing platform including Firepunk Diesel and C & B Diesel. In doing so, we sought to learn what EFILive offers, how long these shops have used the product, advantages of the product in a racing or pulling platform, and how the customer service stacks up.

Firepunk Diesel

For starters, we wanted to get with someone that has definitely has had their iron in the tuning fire, and that’s Lavon Miller at Firepunk Diesel. “I have been using EFILive for over six years,” said Miller. “I like that EFILive offers a wide range of horsepower just by the turn of a switch.” The switch Lavon is referring to is CSP5 five-position switch that allows drivers to change their tuning from mild to wild in a matter of seconds. It’s something that shop owners recommend to drivers looking to upgrade.

In a performance scenario, the track conditions can constantly change, which may lead to tuning changes; maybe pulling power out or even adding more, depending on the situation. With EFILive, it’s made easy. “EFI offers one of the best platforms for competition vehicles when using a CMB849 ECM out of a 2006-07 5.9-liter Dodge,” said Miller. “A CSP6 can be utilized by grounding Pin 38 of the C2 connector, allowing the tuner to enable a staging limiter.”

In addition to enabling a staging limiter, Miller has also implemented a “push to pass” tune for customers that race with a conservative tune-up. If you’re going down the track and trailing the competition by a margin, you can have the push to pass on tap. It will engage the engine’s maximum effort at the press of a button, hopefully allowing you to wring out a win.

When daily driving or even in competition, data is everything. If you’re experiencing problems, the only way to really diagnose the issue is with data. “The data logging features of EFILive make it one of the best platforms I’ve used,” said Miller. “While walking customers through the process can sometimes be frustrating, the refresh rates and data capabilities on EFILive are terrific.”

The CSP5 switch can be mounted anywhere desired. It allows you to switch between up to five custom tunes at any time.

“EFILive is definitely an advanced program that looks overwhelming to any beginner, but I have made a step-by-step instruction manual for my customers for updating tunes,” said Miller. “I have customers download Teamviewer to their computer and I remotely connect to their machine and can quickly make the necessary changes for them.”

C & B Diesel

We also spoke with Brennan Scheeter of C & B Diesel to get his thoughts on EFILive. “One of the best features of EFILive, for us, is how user-friendly it is,” said Scheeter. “When it first came out, it was a bit intimidating, but they quickly improved on that and the support to back it up. We like how they are constantly improving the product, whereas other companies are stuck in their ways and stick with old programming.”

Although there are a ton of different tuning platforms, EFILive has made their product sell for a competitive price. “The pricing doesn’t go up with every update or over time. It is a bottom-line price and has stayed that way,” said Scheeter. “We have used EFILive for nearly eight years. Before we were even an established shop, we would use it daily for our local friends and our personal trucks.”

Although the capabilities of writing your own tunes are available, C & B doesn’t choose to partake. “We don’t write our tunes for vehicles, we just install the tune for other companies,” said Scheeter. “We don’t have the time to write and test our own tunes, so we utilize grade-A companies to ensure our customers are getting worthwhile tuning.”

As you all know, the late-model trucks, like the L5P Duramax trucks, are nearly impossible to get into and tune. “They are always improving ways to tune newer trucks and I don’t anticipate that slowing down,” said Scheeter. “Although the new trucks are getting more and more advanced, the L5P may be tunable before too long.”

So there you have it. EFLive is one of the best tuning platforms for a huge amount of trucks. If you’re in the range of trucks that are capable of utilizing the capabilities of EFIlive, you can get yours today and get to tuning.
