With the unfortunate news about the National Hot Rod Diesel Association, diesel enthusiasts on the west coast were eager to find a landing place for a weekend of fun diesel action. Luckily for them, BD Diesel Performance started what is probably the first of many events north of the border. BD Diesel’s local track, Mission Raceway Park is now home of the BD Diesel West Coast Summer Shootout.
The West Coast Summer Shootout is perfect if you’re in the mood for the truck show atmosphere, a day full of drag racing, watching high horsepower diesel trucks lay it down on the rollers, and even drifting.

Naturally, mother nature had something to say about this event, and even then, the turnout was epic. Our sources tell us there were over 3,000 spectators, 150 trucks, and 50 drift cars at Mission Raceway. If the turnout was this big with a chance of weather, imagine the perfect weather forecast. Also, BD has always been into raising money for charity.
Over at the Show And Shine, it was Jim Kielstra taking the overall best in show victory.
Drag Racing
No vehicle discrimination here. Cars or trucks can race at this event.
Unfortunately, with all of the weather floating around, the drag racing didn’t get to finish up like they had liked. As you know, they can’t let these big heavy trucks go that fast on a wet surface because of the liability. But, that didn’t stop these west coasters from having a good time. Can’t drag race? That’s fine. They threw them on the dyno anyway just to keep the show going.
Another reason why we can't wait to get to the next event is the slew of new builds up there. There are so many unique builds that we never get the chance to see compete.
Dyno Competition
In fact, the dyno had a pile of trucks go through. Ford, GM, and Dodges lined up for their turn to see what their hard work and hard earned money funded. In the Duramax category, Dylan Carroll in his 2007 LBZ Duramax took the victory with the highest power of 977-horsepower and 1,575 lb/ft torque.
In the other V8 diesel category, it was Brady Hoolsema taking the crown for the most powerful Power Stroke. Hoolsema finished the day on the dyno with 1,241-horsepower and 2,040 lb/ft torque. Then, bringing up the rear, it was Matthew Bendoritis taking the win in the Cummins category with a towering 1,619-horsepower and 2,162-lb/ft of torque. This goes to show these boys and girls up north can party too.

2020 Summer Shootout
Unfortunately, Diesel Army couldn’t make the trip this year to Mission to see this event for ourselves, but the 2020 event planning committee is already hard at work in improving and growing this event. In fact, there are already talks of adding to sleds to the event for late night sled pulling action Canadian style.
