Power Stroke Fuel System Upgrade For 1994-1997 Trucks

Here at Diesel Army, we have covered a multitude of new parts hitting the market, but we feel this one is different. Our friends at Strictly Diesel now offer a complete Power Stroke fuel system upgrade kit for the 1994-1997 Ford Power Stroke-powered trucks. If you’re looking for a more reliable way to get fuel from the tank to the injectors, the search is over.

The Driven Diesel kit converts the OE mechanical fuel system to a more reliable electric fuel system, supplies the injectors with a higher volume of fuel, offers much better filtration, and the regulated return part of the kit replaces all of the fuel lines on the engine. For trucks with dual fuel tanks, it allows them to reuse the factory selector valve, this also means you don’t have to remove the fuel tanks during installation.

Power Stroke fuel system upgrade

The Power Stroke fuel system upgrade kit includes a complete wiring harness to supply key-on power to the pump. To keep the pump from running continuously when using accessories without the engine running, they designed a pump controller into the harness. After about 20 seconds of not seeing engine oil pressure, it will turn off power to the pump.

If you're looking for a quality kit that will take your truck straight to reliable on the fuel system side, say no more. Look how clean the mounting is in the far right illustration.

The OEM fuel pump is located in the center of the engine valley and is driven by a camshaft lobe. The pump’s pressure output can be inconsistent and these pumps are a very common source of leaks. Due to the age of these trucks, some have gone through multiple pumps over the years. The fuel filter bowl is another common source of fuel leaks from any one of its o-rings.

Eliminating these two components makes for a much more reliable fuel system that delivers consistent pressure, better filtration, and a fuel pump that has a very long service life. With the fuel bowl removed it also gives easier access to the high-pressure oil pump when it’s time to be resealed or replaced, and the top of the engine looks much cleaner.

Wondering more about this kit, we reached out to Dennis Schroeder, co-owner of Strictly Diesel, to let us know what’s available with these kits. “This kit works well for the majority of the trucks on the road, but for those that need a larger fuel supply, we do offer this kit with dual Bosch pumps. The single pump kit can be upgraded to a dual pump setup at any time.”

NOTE: High-performance configurations may require the elimination of the fuel tank selector valve.  Consult with Strictly Diesel to discuss your high-performance needs.

We had a few more questions for Schroeder and hopefully, his answers clear up any confusion you might have.

DA- How important is this upgrade for the 7.3-liter trucks in this year range? Do they have problems this kit fixes, or is this an upgrade that enthusiasts might consider just for peace of mind?

DS- The stock mechanical pump suffers from three issues.  First, it is prone to failure and leaks.  Second, because it is driven off of a cam lobe, the fuel pressure and flow delivered to the fuel rails are not consistent like an electric pump provides.  Last, there is only one size mechanical pump, so it isn’t easily upgraded to a larger size if needed to support larger fuel injectors.”

DA- From a mechanical standpoint, how hard is this kit to install?

DS- “Upgrading to our electric fuel system is not a small task. It involves the removal of the turbo, the removal and elimination of the OEM mechanical pump, fuel filter bowl, and lines. Then, there is the installation of the electric pump and filters on the frame, installation of the new fuel lines, and pressure regulator, as well as for the wiring to run the system.  We provide detailed instructions for our DIY customers, and we advise them to plan for this to be a project that takes a few days to complete.”

DA- Are there any other parts customers should combine with this or is it complete by itself?

DS- “This kit comes complete concerning the electric fuel system conversion on a ’94-’97 Power Stroke trucks. That said, it would be a very good idea to drop and inspect the fuel tanks for issues like broken or missing pickup screens, and if it is original or very old, possibly consider replacing the fuel tank selector valve at the same time, just to make sure the rest of the system is in good working order.”

It’s pretty clear that for any of you with a truck in this range, this is a must. Why run your truck up the road every day and wonder about these potential issues when it could all be fixed in a few day’s work?
