2022 Silverado 3.0-Liter Duramax Get Big Towing Boost

With all the buzz surrounding the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado, and especially the burly ZR2 variant, there is a new development of especially keen interest to us diesel fans. The Silverado now has improved towing with the 3.0-liter Duramax engine option.

The very cool ZR2 has overshadowed some great news for diesel fans.

The six-cylinder turbo-diesel Silverado’s towing capacity had been bumped up a whopping 4000 pounds for a grand total of 13,300.  The key to this feat is the newly available Max Trailering Package that was previously unavailable with the oil-burning motor.

The improvements are the result of tweaks to the frame, suspension, and a lower-geared 3.73 rear axle. The 3.0 Duramax remains unchanged.

Also new for this year is the addition of GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driving-assist system. The Super Cruise for the Silverado will be offered with trailering mode, meaning that the system can be used while towing a trailer but alas, it will only be available on the fancy High Country trim. Think of the Silverado with the 3.0 diesel as a nice tweener between the 1500 and 2500 models with the tow package.

The new interior is a big improvement for 2022.

But that’s if you can get one. With the ongoing suspension of 3.0-liter Duramax diesel production, availability is up in the air. We should start to see the new Silverados hit dealer lots in the spring of 2022, so hopefully, the General will have the production snags cleared up by then.

The 3.0 Duramax diesel has been a big hit with buyers and now with more towing capacity, it should find an even bigger audience.
