Like any other hose that’s 20 plus years old, the oil supply hose for the vacuum pump on 1998.5-2002 5.9-liter 24-valve engines is prone to leaking. This hose has also been discontinued by Cummins so if you’re in need of one it has been difficult to impossible to locate, until now.
After running into part availability issues on trucks in their shop, Strictly Diesel in Phoenix, Arizona, decided to make their own. Strictly Diesel now offers a direct replacement hose built to the quality standards they’re known for and it is a simple “remove and replace” operation.
This direct replacement oil hose supplies engine oil to the integrated vacuum pump on 98.5-02 24-valve Cummins trucks with the VP44 injection pump. For those unfamiliar with this, the vacuum pump is mounted to the backside of the timing cover on the driver side of the engine. We spoke with Nate Brekken, co-owner of Strictly Diesel about steps needed to install their part, and here’s what he had to say.
“Installation is truly as simple as removing the old line and installing the new one. All you’ll need for tools is a 9/16″ wrench, a rag, and engine oil. No other parts need to be removed to access the hose, you’ll gain access from below the truck but once you’re there just loosen and remove both ends of the old hose and thread the new one on.
When removing the old line just be prepared for some oil to leak out as not to stain your driveway. One end threads onto the bottom of the vacuum pump while the other threads onto a fitting on the driver side of the engine block. Once it’s installed make sure the engine oil level is correct, that there are no leaks at the fittings and you’re done”.
