Over this past weekend, the 33rd annual Shell Rotella SuperRigs show was held at the Retama Park in Selma, Texas. The SuperRigs show is one of the most prestigious events within the trucking industry and it certainly has the most prize money.
Kiegan Nelson out of Richfield, Wisconson took home the Best Of Show honor in his 1985 Peterbilt 359 hauling a 2014 MAC trailer. Not only where the Shell judges impressed with the truck, but it, also, took home the People’s Choice category.
“It was an amazing experience to compete against all these trucks and to come out on top is a great feeling,” said Nelson. “There were a lot of cool trucks here and to take home the top title is incredibly surreal.” In addition to the title of Best Of Show, Nelson takes home $10,000 from Shell Rotella and another $5,000 from MAC Trailers.
Runner up was Phil Miller’s 2010 Peterbilt 389. In addition to being runner up in Best Of Show, Miller took home Best Engine thanks to his chrome engine compartment and compounds from PDI. Miller has a few more modifications he wants to do and with the $4,000 from Shell Rotella and $3,000 from MAC Trailer it just became a lot easier to achieve.
Now before you start looking at these trucks and think they are nothing but show trucks, we assure you, these are true working trucks. We spoke with Miller extensively (feature coming soon) about his Peterbilt and he runs about 130,000 miles a year on her and has almost 700,000 miles on the odometer.
In fact, Shell representatives said they keep everyone’s records who enter and as people register for the current show, they can check their mileage from the previous show they attended to ensure these are working trucks. This was the first year they opened a Show Only category, but those entrants are not available for “Best Of” honors.
