Tires gripping asphalt, the roar of massive diesel engines, and the smell of race fuel filled the air at Rockingham Dragway recently as the track played host to the 10th anniversary of Rudy’s Spring Truck Jam.
Far from a typical car show, this event brought together horsepower fanatics and a lot of custom builds that redefine what’s possible on a drag strip.
Austin Denny, a seasoned participant with about 10 years in the scene, brought his six-liter Power Stroke truck, a machine with a storied past. “All right, we’re going promod racing. Let’s get this thing done and figure it out,” Denny stated.
The truck, now featuring a Warren Diesel Injection-built engine and a TH400 transmission, is undergoing a “giant learning curve” in its new promod configuration.
Another familiar face, Brett Marcum, was tackling the new 570 class. “We’re going to try and run some 570 passes,” Marcum shared, admitting the team was “a little against it at first just because… nobody likes change”.
Despite some struggles, he remained optimistic, relying on recent upgrades like a rack-and-pinion and new coilovers.
The new coilovers was from Cody Fisher 1X Precision. It helped the truck “not bounce and go down the track straight.” as what Marcum described. He also praised Hot Shot’s Secret, with whom he’s partnered since 2019.
A guy named Chris from Slersville, Maryland, showcased his ’06 Ram with a Garrett 88mm turob that snowballed out of control from a street-driven 1,000-horsepower build to a close to 1,800-horsepower capable machine.
Chris races in 670 and e.t. classes, cherishing the community aspect. “Without a doubt, it’s the family I’ve met at ODSS; everyone’s been so welcoming,” he stated.
Ryan Riser, driving a 2012 Powerstroke 6.7, represented Ford in a field dominated by Cummins.
“We are the last, that’s for sure. I hope we’re the first Pioneer, but we need some more buddies to show up and give us a hand,” Riser quipped, aiming to “knock the tree down and run it out the back.”
