Stripping the Chassis to the Bones

Firepunk LLC began fabricating a four-wheel-drive drag truck for David Petrick, discarding an old cage to build a full 25.4-spec chassis. Miller notes, “We want to try to get this final build with a cast motor to 3600 lb or less so that we can run a 254 certification roll bar.” Cutting away the stock floorpan, firewall, and inner cab structure removed 200 pounds. To achieve 4.5 inches of ground clearance, fabricators shifted the front axle pumpkin and transfer case to the passenger side. Enclosing the front driveshaft, the shop constructed a fireproof tunnel through the firewall. Out back, the crew installed a Moser 9-inch rearend and a Firepunk Extreme four-link setup.

Harnessing a 3,710 HP 4×4 Cummins Engine

Finishing the bodywork, the team painted electric-blue racing stripes on the cowl hood before displaying the vehicle at the PRI show. Wiring the truck with a MoTeC system provided control over the air shifter, transbrake, and fuel parameters. Prior to track testing, the vehicle visited the S&S hub dyno to verify system functions under heavy mechanical load. The powerplant produced 3,710 horsepower during dyno pulls. Wiring the Reverse gear switch to a rear camera allowed the transbrake to lock automatically during burnouts.

Track Debut At Edgewater Motorsports Park

The team focused on short 60-foot passes when they transported the truck to Edgewater Motorsports Park for track testing. Spinning tires on the initial hit required pulling power out of the early launch strategy. Miller says, “There’s no point in running power out the back until it goes fast early.” Making eight passes throughout the day, progress followed as the driver logged consecutive 1.15-second 60-foot times. Despite breaking a clock cap, the crew finished testing with a 6.05-second pass, gathering tuning data.
