What do you get when you combine the brute force of a Cummins diesel with the aggressive looks and suspension of a Ram TRX? The crew at Goonzquad is finding out as they build the world’s first Cummins-swapped TRX. This isn’t your typical engine swap; they’re taking a wrecked 2021 Ram 2500 Cummins and completely transforming its body into a heavy-duty TRX clone.
Measuring Up The Challenge
The project began with confirming the huge size differences between the two trucks. The Ram 2500 has a longer wheelbase (three inches) and a longer cab (4.5 inches) compared to the TRX. While initially considering a Mega Cab swap to fill the gap, the team decided the only way to achieve an authentic TRX look was to shorten the heavy-duty frame itself. After discovering the original truck’s frame was damaged, they sourced a perfect replacement frame for just $1,800.
Shortening The Beast
Using the factory splice points designed for frame repairs, they carefully cut the replacement frame apart, removed a full nine-inch section, and expertly welded it back together. They ensured everything was perfectly straight and level using a frame machine. Custom brackets were then fabricated to mount the TRX bed and cab onto the modified chassis, cleverly retaining factory mounting points for components like the fuel tank. This heavy-duty Cummins-swapped TRX chassis was now ready for assembly.
TRX Body Meets HD Frame
With the frame ready, the cab and bed were mated to the chassis, showing the vision coming together. Attention then turned to the complex front-end conversion. The team started fitting the TRX aprons, radiator support, headlights, and fenders, but quickly hit a major snag: the TRX fenders don’t align with the Ram 2500 doors, creating large gaps and preventing the doors from functioning correctly. This will require extensive custom bodywork, potentially the most challenging part of the build.
The Road Ahead For The Cummins Swapped TRX
While tackling the bodywork challenges, the team also upgraded the Cummins engine with a screamer turbo from BD Diesel. Future plans include beefed-up suspension components and modifying the five-inch diesel exhaust to exit through dual tips that fit the TRX bumper. This unique build is a massive undertaking, combining heavy-duty capability with high-performance aesthetics in a way never seen before, creating a true one-of-a-kind truck.
