It is also the rarest production Duramax ever made because AM General only produced this configuration for a short 17-month window from January 2005 to May 2006. The existence of this beast is largely thanks to Arnold Schwarzenegger, who fell in love with the military Humvee and pushed the manufacturer to build a version for the streets.

The Ultimate Powertrain Evolution

Earlier H1 models struggled with underpowered diesel engines that felt gutless in such a heavy platform. The Alpha model solved this problem by equipping a Kodiak-derived LLY Duramax engine that produced 300 horsepower and 520 pound-feet of torque. Fitting this massive engine required huge changes to the cooling system because the small grille could not capture enough air. Engineers had to mount the intercooler flat under the hood vent to make it work.
