The Hummer H1 Alpha is arguably the most rugged vehicle ever sold to the public. It is also the rarest production Duramax ever made because AM General only produced this configuration for a short 17-month window from January 2005 to May 2006. The existence of this beast is largely thanks to Arnold Schwarzenegger, who fell in love with the military Humvee and pushed the manufacturer to build a version for the streets.

The Ultimate Powertrain Evolution
Earlier H1 models struggled with underpowered diesel engines that felt gutless in such a heavy platform. The Alpha model solved this problem by equipping a Kodiak-derived LLY Duramax engine that produced 300 horsepower and 520 pound-feet of torque. Fitting this massive engine required huge changes to the cooling system because the small grille could not capture enough air. Engineers had to mount the intercooler flat under the hood vent to make it work.

Suspension Of The Hummer H1 Alpha
This truck utilizes portal axles that gear down at the wheel hub to provide an incredible 16 inches of ground clearance on factory 37-inch tires. This design forces the brakes to be mounted inboard near the differentials rather than at the wheels. The truck is also ludicrously wide at 86.5 inches without mirrors, which makes it broader than a modern dually. The massive control arms are built to survive combat environments.

Interior Tech And Quirks
The interior feels surprisingly small because a huge center console covers the engine and transmission. Drivers have access to a Central Tire Inflation System that allows them to air up or down for trails from the cab. The truck also features a flip-down screen connected to a sensor on the A-pillar that provides infrared night vision. It is worth noting that this 2006 model did not even come with factory airbags. Despite the massive size, the driver has very little footroom due to the transmission tunnel.

A Rare Piece Of History
AM General produced a total of 11,818 H1s during the entire run, but only 729 of them were the Alpha model with the Duramax. This scarcity makes it a collector item that holds value better than any other Duramax vehicle. It is not efficient or practical for daily driving, but it remains a work of art. The Hummer H1 Alpha represents the absolute peak of military engineering available to civilians.
