Should You Buy A Diesel Or Gas Truck? The Answer Might Shock You!

If you’ve been eyeing a pickup for towing, hauling, or even daily driving, one of the first questions you’ll face is: diesel or gas truck? For many diesel enthusiasts—and since you’re here at Diesel Armythe answer seems obvious. Diesel. But let’s break it down for those weighing the pros and cons of each platform. The wrong choice may result in a bad case of buyer’s remorse.

Diesel Or Gas Truck: Torque, Towing, and Workload

Diesel engines shine when it comes low-rpm torque. That’s a major advantage if you’re regularly towing heavy loads, hauling equipment, or climbing grades. A diesel truck will typically have more pulling power and maintain better fuel economy under load compared to a gas-powered counterpart.

Today’s ¾-ton diesel trucks produce over 900 lb-ft of torque (up to 1,200 lb-ft for the Super Duty), compared to 400–500 lb-ft from gas engines. That translates to smoother towing, less gear hunting, and less strain on the drivetrain. This might result in less driver strain while towing.

However, if your truck is a daily driver with only occasional towing, a modern gas truck might be a more practical and economical option. Gas engines have come a long way in power and efficiency. If you’re looking at heavy payloads, consider gas.

Fuel Economy and Longevity

If you rack up a lot of highway miles, diesel could save you money in the long run. Diesel engines tend to deliver better mpg, especially under load. Plus, they’re known for longevity. Properly maintained diesels often outlast gas engines by 100,000 miles or more.

That said, maintenance costs can be higher. Diesel engines require more oil, frequent fuel filter changes, and DEF fluid (diesel exhaust fluid). While you may save at the pump, keep in mind the overall cost of ownership.

Purchase Price and Upfront Costs

Diesel trucks usually cost $8,000 to $13,000 more than their gas equivalents when new. However, even in the used market, diesels hold their value—sometimes to the frustration of budget-conscious buyers. But that resale value is a plus if you plan to trade in your diesel truck later.

Emissions and Legal Mods

Enthusiasts often prefer diesel because of the mod potential, but emissions laws are tightening. Deleting emissions systems can lead to serious legal trouble. Make sure your plans (or mods) are compliant with local regulations if you’re leaning toward diesel.

Diesel Or Gas Truck: The Verdict

Buy diesel if you:

  • Tow or haul regularly
  • Want long-term durability
  • Prefer low-end torque and efficiency under load
  • Want assurance of having “enough” truck
  • Want big power and torque
  • Gas is unaffordable in your area

Buy gas if you:

  • Tow occasionally or light loads
  • Carry heavy payloads
  • Drive mostly short trips
  • Want lower maintenance costs
  • Can’t afford the upfront cost of a diesel
  • Don’t care what’s under the hood
  • Don’t have access to diesel
  • Diesel is unaffordable in your area

Both have their places. Out of sheer prudence, make sure you test drive both gas and diesel variants of the truck you want before you finalize your decision. Why did you buy (or not buy) a diesel truck? Let us know!
