The 2021 Ultimate Callout Challenge was one we will never forget. In fact, I’m betting that this year will be the blueprint for events to come. There was action in every direction you looked. If you wanted drag racing, it was there. If you wanted dyno pulls, you got it. If you wanted a burnout contest, yeah, they had that too.
The burnout contest was put up by Dan’s Diesel Performance which had a huge bag of cash to give away to the winners. With $10,000 in prize money available, those lovers of tire smokeplanned their attack to put on the best show possible. Richard Nicolette, also known as “Jerzy”, took his ’50s Studebaker truck and prepared it for the tire-shredding contest.
This isn’t your ordinary Studebaker, though — if there is such a thing. But what could make this cooler? How about shoving a Detroit 8V53 diesel engine between the fenders? You heard me, Jerzy stuffed a supercharged diesel engine in this old truck. Okay, actually, he also added four turbos to it too. This two-stroke diesel engine is fed by not only a supercharger but four turbos stacked onto it too.
Jerzy took home the prize when the day ended, and deservedly so. This truck is wild. All of the hard work that went into getting it ready paid off when he earned $5,000 in cash. I talked with Jerzy to find out what was done to make this happen and like Jerzy, he was excited to talk about it. “We wanted wild and we did wild. This engine is supercharged but we decided to feed it with four turbos too,” he said.
This truck obviously took some customization, and that means there was some “Frankensteining” going on. This includes air over hydraulic front brakes, air rear brakes, a rear axle out of a single axle tractor, a four-speed Lenco Racing CS1 transmission, FASS fuel lift pump, triple disc McLeod Racing clutch, modified governor, and a full system of nitrous on board.
Although he didn’t use the nitrous on the truck during the contest, it didn’t matter. His show was enough to bring home the win and the $5,000 in prize money. Jerzy knows that it takes a lot to get this to where it is and there are a few people he wanted to thank for all of their support.
“I want to thank Jose from JR Collision, my late father, my mother, Kyle from Hot Shot’s Secret, Brad from FASS, my family from Firepunk Diesel, my family from D&J Precision Machine, Frank The Tank, Chris J, and of course, Donald Trump.”
Congratulations to Jerzy on his victory at the first annual Dan’s Diesel Performance Burnout Contest at the Ultimate Callout Challenge and everyone involved! I can’t wait to see more of this in future events because the burnout pit was literally packed to the gills. I’d say they’re onto something here.
