Cummins Power Overload! Wild Crash at Spectator Drags Event

A video from the Owosso Speedway during its 2024 Spectator Drags event captured a thrilling and ultimately unfortunate sequence of events involving a modified 2005 Dodge Ram and a 2017 Chevy Cruze.

The video begins with the Dodge and Cruze on the starting line. After the go signal, you can see that the Dodge took an easy, commanding lead against the stock-looking Cruze in the first 10 seconds of the race. This is expected due to the Cummins engine power that allowed the truck to pull away decisively.

Despite its dominance in the first 10 seconds of the race, a close-up image reveals some sparks flying from one of the Dodge’s rear wheels. It may have been caused by traction problems because of its immense power, thus overwhelming the tires on the track surface. Some suggest it was caused by a malfunctioned rear brake.

This is when the situation takes a dramatic turn as the Dodge, despite its easy lead in the first 10 seconds of the race, loses control. It came crashing into the track wall, which allowed the Cruze to take the lead.

The impact created a cloud of smoke, raising some concerns about the driver’s safety and the extent of the damage to the truck. Once the Dodge finally came to a stop, you could see that it scratched the track wall badly. The driver is said to be a veteran of circle track racing and this very track, most likely using his tow vehicle for the Spectator Drags.

The most crucial moment arrived when the driver emerged from the wrecked Dodge unharmed. It was a huge relief for the audience and really showed how important safety equipment and track protocols are.

The event’s safety team responded quickly and professionally. Multiple specialized tow tracks and personnel arrived on the scene. Clearly the event organizers at the 2004 Spectator Drags were well-prepared to handle such incidents.

The final images show the Dodge being towed away. A closer look revealed the damage to the truck. Thankfully, the damage is far less severe than initially feared due to the loud crashing noise it made when it crashed.

All images used belongs to TBERG MEDIA.

The truck only sustained some cosmetic dents and scrapes along the driver’s side. No apparent major structural damage so far. The minimal damage suggested that while the incident was visually dramatic, it was a relatively low-impact crash.
