Video: Cummins Powered Nissan 240SX! Yes, That Is Not A Typo

240sx5We recently came across Glenn Irizarry of Glenngineering. He is a pretty unique individual and pretty well known in the import market. We aren’t sure if his latest creation is one that will be seen as a trend setting vehicle or not, but it is certainly unique. “I wanted to do something totally different and eye catching. I love diesels, so I figured why not drop a 4bt into my racecar,” wrote Irizarry.

The car itself is a 1989 Nissan 240SX convertible that he uses for drifting and road racing. After stripping down everything, reinforcing the chassis and lightening up as much as he could, it was time to focus on the engine.

240sx2He picked up a 1999 Cummins 4BT from a Ford bred truck. The engine had been rebuilt 50,000 miles ago. So, he didn’t feel a need to tear the engine completely apart. Instead, he opted for a set of Industrial Injection Prince of Darkness injectors, Denny T Performance Stage II fuel pin, ARP head studs, 3200 rpm governor spring and a HX35 Holset turbo.

The boosted air runs through a Garrett intercooler and the exhaust now runs down and out the back thanks to a custom exhaust system that he built (4” exhaust with a 6” tip). Both videos were early in the development and the exhaust is pointed upwards out of the heavily modified hood.

240sx4Behind the engine is a G-Force GF3650 transmission which sends the power back to a rear end out of a ’08 Nissan Pathfinder with a 3.11 gear ratio. When asked about the weight, Irizarry said that is weighted “About 1100 With the tranny. I made up [a lot of the difference] by moving the engine back a good amount.”

All said and done, he is quite happy with the conversion. “I am getting over 55MPG on french fry oil,” mentioned Irizarry. He figures he is in the conversion about $8,000 dollars but with the fuel savings, it should pay for itself fairly quick. Not to mention the cool factor when on the track.
