The stance of this rig resembles that of a Land Rover Defender Bronco.

The Mercedes G Wagon is an icon of luxury and utilitarian transport competing for attention. A fashion accessory to rappers and Hollywood celebrities, and a military transport to countries all around the world. As the Land Rover Defender is to the Range Rover the Mercedes G of the 1980s is to the G-Wagon of today.

This 1985 300 GD model was an import from Europe, a model never offered in the United States. If that obscurity isn’t enough to distance yourself from the yuppie crowd, maybe the custom touches and mechanics of this truck will.

Custom fabric soft tops cover the convertible top and bed keeping you and your cargo dry in the rain.

The most prominent of which is a convertible top and custom cover. A feature not offered from the manufacturer, now you will be able to enjoy the sunshine and increased visibility off road.

Rolling down the road or through the hill this four-wheel drive Mercedes rides on BFG Mud Terrains. High and low ranges are available to the driver at arms reach to the transfer case, and manual four-speed gearbox.

Powering this truck is a Mercedes Benz OM617, a 3-liter, inline 5-cylinder turbodiesel that produces 125 hp and 250 nm of torque. That may not sound like the most impressive power plant when comparing todays pumped up Cummins, Duramax, or Powerstrokes, but let’s consider the original purpose of this vehicle.

This is not a pulling vehicle, not a drag racer, this is a truck that was designed to be rugged dependable and work anywhere. Clearly visible by the sparsely appointed, utilitarian interior this was meant to be a work truck. The pretentiousness of future G Wagons not yet a part of its identity.

The paint and body look fantastic for a 1985 truck, someone really cared for this custom diesel
