Hot Off The Press: ARP Offering Head Stud Kit For 2.8-Liter Duramax

2016 Chevrolet Colorado 2.8L Duramax Turbo Diesel

After traveling to southern California, we got to catch up with the crew at Automotive Racing Products. Also known as “ARP”. As usual, they are continuing to supply the best hardware for virtually everything and with that, there are always new platforms coming out they will adapt to. One of these applications includes the 2.8-Liter Duramax engine.
The Duramax 2.8-Liter Turbo Diesel engine is said to be the cleanest diesel truck engine ever produced by General Motors and meets the toughest U.S emissions standards. General Motors credits that to their cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation system. This engine is apart of GM’s global family of turbo-diesel four-cylinder engines and features a variable-geometry turbo for optimal power and efficiency across the rpm band and a balance shaft for smoothness.

With such a capable engine, companies are finding ways to modify these engines into making much more power and torque than they did from the factory. With that, you can expect increased engine pressures including cylinder pressure. Luckily for us, ARP has adapted to the new engine platform and now offer a full cylinder head stud for it.
As I’m sure you already know, their cylinder head stud kits replace the factory head bolts. During assembly, with a head bot, it must be installed by torquing it into place. Due to a bolt’s design, it has to be rotated into its slot in order to engage the threads and secure it into place. In this process, it creates both twisting and vertical clamping force which results in stretching and twisting of the bolt when your cylinders combustion chamber has accelerated load.
With a stud, it can be tightened into place without clamping force in any direction when torqued down. A stud is installed at finger tight strength, then a washer and nut its torqued into place against the stud. This allows the nut to apply the force versus the fastener itself avoiding rotational force completely. This results in a more evenly distributed torque load that offers higher reliability and a lower chance of a compr0mised head gasket.

ARP’s new 2.8-Liter head stud kit part number is 230-4203 and is available for immediate delivery. All ARP studs are centerless ground, heat-treated prior to thread rolling and machining and rated at 220,000-PSI tensile strength. Including are ten Metric 14 ARP2000 studs, ten 9/16-inch 12-point nuts, 9/16-inch ID parallel-ground washers and a 1.5-oz package of ARP Ultra-Torque Fastener Assembly Lube.
