How Big Is Your Air Compressor? Bet It Doesn’t Even Compare To This!

AC_Side

There are a lot of things guys get envious of; trucks, tools, garages and even air compressors. For most people, having a 5 horsepower, 80 gallon or 120 gallon air compressor would make you top dog. But we have to ask…how cool would it be to have a 1,000 plus horsepower air compressor?

AC_RearIn the never ending quest to out do your friends, this would certainly be one for the books. We came across this used Ingersoll Ran Centrifugal Air Compressor on eBay. This thing is so massive, that the engine is estimated to produce 1,250 horsepower at 1600 rpms.

The air compressor itself is capable of producing 5,963 cfm at 125 psi. That number is so big you may not be able to truly picture it. So, instead of comparing it to your average air compressor at home (15 cfm is a pretty good size) let’s compare it to something that is much larger, say your air conditioner. After all, your air conditioner at home is able to move enough volume to cool your entire house.

A decent rule of thumb is 400 cfm is roughly 1 ton. So, that would mean this air compressor is roughly equivalent of a 15 ton unit. That would be the case at 125 psi!

AC_3_4Ok, back to home use… Take a 1/2 inch drive standard anvil impact wrench from Snap-on. According to their specs, the gun uses 4.0 cfm. So, roughly you and about 1489 of your closes friends could be using the impact at the same time.

Now the down side, the 3512B engine 3,173 cubic inches. The V12 engine is 111.3 inches long (9.275 feet) and looking at the side profile of the AC unit, we are guessing that is less than 1/3 of the total length (probably somewhere around the 375 to 400 inches (31.25 to 33.3 feet). So, it probably won’t fit exactly where your old air compressor did. For an exhaust, you might have to cut a 11.5 inch hole in the roof, but hey, how cool would it be to have a smoke stack on your house?

Enough playing around, check out this huge air compressor and let us know what you think!
