Old School Dodge Power Wagon Goes Diesel

Old School Dodge Power Wagon Goes Diesel

When a conversation about truck styles is happening, the Dodge Power Wagon is sure to be part of the discussion. But how many of you would envision an old school, no-frills work truck? Personally, I do. That is why I really appreciate that Desert Power Wagons, located in Castle Hayne, North Carolina, has released a true masterpiece — a vintage work truck with late-model Cummins power.

Behold, the Turbo Diesel-powered four-door Desert Power Wagon. While these spartan work trucks are very cool to look at, it’s hard to find anyone who can say they are comfortable to drive for any amount of time. In stock form, they are unbearably slow, too loud, and have an uncomfortable seating position. The Desert Power Wagons team set out to change that distinction.

Combining rugged looks with a modern interior and drivetrain makes for one very cool hauler.

While retaining the awesome beauty of the classic Power Wagon lines, they decided to make these trucks modern, comfortable, daily drivers. The new Desert Power Wagons are outfitted with 6.7-liter Cummins engines and a 68RFE automatic transmission. The heavy-duty Borg-Warner manual shift-on-the-fly transfer case ensures that all four wheels receive the full force of its 385 horsepower and 930 pound-feet of torque when needed.

The heavy-duty front and rear axles are situated on a powder-coated custom frame with a Carli 2.5-inch lift suspension, power steering, anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control, air conditioning, heated power seats, keyless entry, enhanced sound deadening, rear-view camera, 12-volt synchronized electric windshield wipers, TPMS sensors, cruise control, and more. Desert Power Wagons has brought the rugged Power Wagon into the 21st century.

The vehicle stands on matte black 20×10 MR605 Method Race Wheels wrapped with aggressive 40 x 14.5 Atturo Trail Blade Boss mud terrain tires. This combination is designed to not only meet the toughest terrains but also dominate them.

The all-new body is finished in a deep Gun Metal Gray Metallic and the front end showcases the distinctive vertical grille and radiator surround giving way to the flowing front fenders with teardrop headlight buckets and wide running boards. A Warn VR EVO 12-S winch with synthetic line is mounted to the satin black powder-coated bumper with unmistakable bumperettes. For modern illumination, LED headlamps with smoked marker, turn, reverse, and tail lamps have been fitted. The solid oak wood bed floor with stainless steel bed slats brings an upscale touch to this military-inspired workhorse.

Amp Research power side steps make entering and exiting the passenger cabin easy, whether it’s through the front doors or the slick rear suicide doors. Once inside, is where you’ll find the real magic of this incredible Desert Power Wagon — all of the amenities of the modern Ram’s interior have been integrated!

The cockpit in this modernized Power Wagon is complete with black leather upholstered heated front sport seats and a matching three-passenger rear seat, both with contrasting white stitching, and a luxurious Alcantara headliner. Behind the black four-spoke, leather-wrapped sport steering wheel, you’ll find the driver command center at the heart of the leather-wrapped dash. It is focused around a state-of-the-art infotainment system that includes an Android-based Nakevich 12.1-inch touch-screen head unit with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, built-in Digital Signal Processor, built-in 4G LTE Network, backup camera, and GPS navigation. The audio experience is enhanced by rich-sounding JL Audio C2-525X speakers and a Pioneer TS-WX400DA 100-watt subwoofer.

Convenient amenities include central locking, keyless entry, front and rear power windows, LED ambient interior lighting, a leather-wrapped center console with a deep storage cubby, USB charging points, and two oversized aluminum cup holders.

Desert Power Wagons handcraft each vehicle, and the finished products are truly a cool must-have item. The improvements in performance, comfort, safety, and reliability, all coincide without sacrificing the simplicity and rugged charm of the original Dodge Power Wagon.
