Reader’s Ride Of The Week: Jesse Mowrey’s ’70 Ford F-250 3-53T

As we continue to pay homage to our readers, we once again select a Reader’s Ride Of The Week. We were looking for something with a little bit of old school flavor. Something that isn’t seen on the road very often and has some major character to it.

This is how Mowrey got the truck from his father. Notice the cool tilt front end!

It is pretty easy to see that Jesse Mowrey’s 1970 Ford F-250 isn’t your everyday truck driving on the road. Not only is it 44 years old, but it doesn’t have the regular Cummins power plant that most people would presume once they found out it had a diesel.

Nope, Mowrey’s Ford sports a 2 stroke Detroit Diesel. To make things even a little more different, it has half or less cylinders that most of the diesels on the road. What size is it you ask? Well, it is an inline 3-53T. For those that don’t speak Detroit Diesel, that first number represents how many cylinders (3 in this case) and the second two numbers represent the displacement per cylinder (53 cubic inch per cylinder). So, for those that want to know, it is a 159 cubic inch inline 3. Lastly, what does the T mean, yep you guessed it, Turbocharged!

According to Mowrey, “my dad bought this crew cab in 1979 for 500 bucks with no engine and no rear end it originally came with a 353 Detroit Diesel. Alaska pipeline ordered two crew cabs with service boxes and diesels. Ford shipped the two trucks down to Texas to get Detroit’s and boxes installed. Then shipped them to Alaska.”

Behind the 3-53T is a 5 speed manual out of an S10. “Believe it or not it gets about 25 to 30 mpg Going about 75 mph. Slow getting on the freeway but does great once we are moving,” Mowrey continued.

Since getting the truck from his father, Mowrey swapped the bed on the truck and thoroughly enjoys driving it!
