In the early 1800s in the country now known as Nepal, Britain’s East India Company delved into a short but bloody war with the Kingdom of Gorkha. It was here that the Brits realized that the fierce and mighty Gurkha warriors gained a fearsome reputation, so much so that in the peace treaty it was explicitly stated that Gurkha warriors would be recruited into the East India Company’s mercenary forces. It is a name synonymous with battle and bravery, and it seems like an apt name to give to a bulletproof monster truck.
The Terradyne Gurkha RPV may have started out life as a Ford F-450, but after about $200,000 of modifications and work, it’s unrecognizable as anything but a war machine. Hence the apt name.
With seating for five people and an upgraded 6.7 liter turbodiesel engine making 300 horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque, this bulletproof monster all comes with a 40 gallon fuel tank and 4×4. That means not much can stop it outside of perhaps a RPG launcher or a sheer rock cliff. The Gurkha also has some movie roles to its credit, including the newest RoboCop film and Fast Five.
Weighing in at nearly seven tons, it’s no lightweight by any stretch of the imagination, requiring a beefed-up suspension to handle the extra armor plating. That plating can stop up to 7.62 mm rounds, one of the most popular ammunition types in the world. The cost for this armored piece of mind? Just $278,000 on the Dupont Registry, a steal compared to the typical $300,000+ asking price.
