Video: Stabilize Your Ride For Better Towing Characteristics

It is a huge pain in the butt to feel like you have to worry about who is in control…you or the trailer. But, it happens all the time. It can be caused from the trailer not being loaded properly (weight in the wrong place), high winds, windy roads, poorly set up vehicle and a host of random other things.

So, how do you combat the unsettling feeling that you may not be the one who is dictating the direction you are going for very much longer?

First: make sure you have a decent amount of weight on the vehicle or tongue. This may mean that you need to move one or two of the lighter items to the rear of the trailer and a few heavy items up front. It doesn’t take a whole lot of weight. Generally about 10% of the trailer weight should be supported by the vehicle. This ensures that the trailer is going where you tell it and not the other way around.

Second: if the problem is a poorly setup vehicle for towing, it might be very easy to fix by adding a quality sway bar. Sway bars are designed to help minimize vehicle roll, which helps to keep the trailer more stable.

Recently, Jeep Grand Cherokee introduced a diesel version. Their EcoDiesel is an attractive engine option for people looking for better fuel economy and more capability. With the little 3.0L EcoDiesel, the Grand Cherokee can tow up to 7,400 lbs. This is quite a bit of weight and can be a little unsettling if you are in a windy area or driving on a road with a lot of banked corners. So, Hellwig Products decided this was an excellent platform to offer an upgraded sway bar!

“You want to upgrade your rear sway bar especially if you are towing because it will give you that ultimate stability,” said Melanie Hellwig of Hellwig Products.

As with their other sway bars, the new 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee sway bars are made out of high grade 4140 chrome moly that has been heated treated for the ultimate strength and durability. They are, also, made in house under their own quality control standards. So, no need to worry about getting a set of sway bars that are subpar. These are 100% American Made high quality bars.
