Video: World’s First Diesel Outboard Engine, Developed By OXE-Diesel

Oxe-Diesel3

For decades outboard gasoline powered engines have powered boats across waters and from dock to dock. Recently, a game changer in the maritime industry has come into play; the company OXE-Diesel and their diesel outboard.

Mets1Why diesel

Diesel engines are more efficient than gas engines. This is especially true under load. For maritime operations, the engines are always under load if the propeller is moving. In addition, the diesel engine will make less noise at operational RPM. Combine these benefits with the engine’s ability to produce more torque than a equal size gasoline engine and you can down size the engine for the same size propeller (or upside the propeller for the engine’s power). This in turn will provide better acceleration on the water and enhanced fuel efficiency.

Other features and benefits

A few members of our staff have worked in the marine industry and when it comes to service they will be the first to tell you that either the engine is easy to service or a royal pain in the butt. The OXE outboard diesel engine has been designed for ease of service. All service points are on the front of the unit which means that maintenance can be performed on the water and in a timely manor. Another huge benefit of using a diesel engine is that the fuel is much less flammable than gasoline which means less hazard. A lot of people don’t realize how many boat fires there are and how often boats go up in flames. Just because the boat is in water doesn’t mean you have access to enough water to put an engine fire out.

DSC2000Despite being an outboard engine, OXE managed to incorporate a few innovations from inboard technology. The design of the engine is based off of a GM production diesel and it utilizes a closed circuit cooling system rather than an air cooled system similar to that in most cars. This will help keep the engine cooler when operating at higher speeds. The engine is capable of running on several types of diesel fuel including EN590, ASTM D 975, NATO F76, F75, F54, Marine destillats DMX, DMA, (JP-5, JP-8, Jet A) and well, diesel. The engine has been engineered so that its turbo, intercooler, heat exchangers and oil cooler can withstand the rough conditions of the sea.

Diesel is already the dominate fuel source in large shipping and it was only a matter before it trickled down into outboard boats.
