Who Is King? Controversial Dyno Results On New Ford, GM, and Ram

It is unexplainable but us car and truck people have this need to outperform the next guy. I make more horsepower, I make more torque, my truck went faster, my truck pulls better, etc. These results can be skewed because not everybody has what someone else has for power adders. What if we just took the three big manufacturers and put them on the dyno back-to-back-to-back? Edge Products did.
If you’re reading this, someone you know is a “Ford guy”, “RAM guy” or a “GM guy”. There are seriously brand loyal people out there who will argue to the death on which brand is better. Edge wanted to level the playing field to find out stock-to-stock, who ended up where. No modifications, no extras, just off the lot, brand new trucks on the dyno.

Understanding how brand loyal most of you are, which NEW truck are you after? Is there a brand you’re interested in that isn’t your normal?

Per Edge’s Facebook page, “This one might hurt some feelings and bring out some naysayers, but the proof is in the pudding. These trucks come from our company fleet and were tested in bone stock, right off the dealer lot form. We made three runs with each truck, these numbers were their average.” Each truck had its respective time on the dyno, same day, same conditions, and here is what happened.

Three runs apiece and the average was calculated. What do you think?

If you take a look at the dyno sheet above, it isn’t even close. The 2020 Ford poured the coals to the dyno and cranked out 498-horsepower and 1,086 lb-ft of torque. Slowly following, the Ram and Chevrolet ended with 360-horsepower and 380-horsepower (820 / 890 TQ). This resulted in a big debate. In fact, once Edge posted these results, it was popping up all over social media.
After over 2,000 comments and almost 4,500 shares, the results were in. Ford people were high and mighty and the GM and Ram crew wasn’t having it. The truck loyal fans were curious as to how this even happened. Why wasn’t a High-Output Ram used? Why are the Duramax numbers different than what we see online?
Edge had an answer for them, too. They said they are planning on hitting the dyno with the High-Output truck soon, but even then, they aren’t expecting numbers anywhere near the Ford’s output. As for the Duramax output, people were commenting photos of higher numbers but they didn’t realize that these were crankshaft output, not real wheel horsepower.
“Assuming our Ford’s results were a fluke, we found another 2020 and a 2021 model to compare, and all three trucks were within 5-horsepower of each other, all hovering the 500-horsepower mark. Not sure we can call it a fluke at this point. It looks like Ram and GM are going to need to step up their game, they’re getting left in the dust!” For anyone saying they the results were off because of this truck, they’ve tried other trucks. Heck, even other people doing similar tests have come up with this conclusion. So, what do you think?

For those on social who are saying the high output will be the difference for the Rams, Edge fired back:
Huge thanks to Randy at Randy’s Transmissions for the loan of his personal truck and some of his time this afternoon. We ran that truck a dozen different ways, trying to different loads, 4th gear vs 5th gear to find the absolute best number we possibly could. At the end of the day that 2021 HO RAM is no doubt making good power and torque. If it would hold 5th gear without a downshift you may even see these torque numbers go higher. But on the chassis dyno, this was the best we were going to get and it’s still not quite enough to catch the Ford.
For comparison’s sake, while Randy was still there, the Edge crew pulled in their brand new 575-mile 2022 F250 where it backed up our previous Ford torque numbers with even better results. Horsepower is down from our 2021, but the jury is out on whether the Ford is ‘derating’ during the initial engine break-in mileage. So, what do you take away from this? The truth is, each of these trucks is great and all three of them will do virtually anything you need them to.
I think the real test would be to beat on each of them in real world testing with trailers and super heavy loads and then compare. No matter the results on a dyno, you’re never going to convert anyone. This is merely a fun exercise that will create some good debate. Also, please note that a dyno is simply a tuning tool. So, let’s hear it. Pick one and ride with it!
For more information about Edge Products, be sure and head over to their website here. Each truck is undergoing testing with their tuning and these outputs are going to be much higher than they are now. If you want to take your truck to the next level, see what parts fit your ride.
