There are generally two types of people in the world, those that are functional people and those that are looks (or aesthetics) people. Now, don’t get me wrong, just like politics you have your right wing and left wing, but there are those in between. But if you take a far enough step back, generally people will lean towards one way over the other.
Then you have your extremists that could absolutely care less about one and will sacrifice as much as they can to achieve their extremist views. We have to say that when we came across this custom three wheel diesel powered vehicle, we didn’t know what to think. Must be someone who was hard core function right?
The initial image shows the a rear three quarter shot of the vehicle but with panels off (well, we realize that now, but we didn’t realize that initially). We were trying to figure out what the heck we were looking at. Then, as we scrolled through the images, we started to realize what the individual was trying to create.
Perhaps the builder wasn’t as far right as we initially thought. From our estimates, he was trying to build a comfortable two-seater that would achieve extremely high fuel economy (all function). He probably took his inspiration from a Volkswagen Bug and a Can-Am Spyder (aesthetics). While the VW isn’t usually considered an inspirational vehicle, the influences here are quite noticeable.
To power this creation the builder settled on a three cylinder Perkins – Caterpillar C1.1. That was an engine that none of us in the office were familiar with. After looking the C1.1 up, we found that the current production models offers a whopping 28.2 flywheel horsepower (cannot forget the .2!). The engines are rated for up to 3400 rpms. The current model is naturally aspirated with a 23:1 compression ratio and it still uses indirect injection. The bore is 77mm (3.03 inches) and the little three cylinder engine has a stroke of 81mm (3.19 inches).
According to the seller, this has been a project that he started, worked on and eventually lost interest in. This is the case with a lot of projects in this world, but most of them aren’t as unique as this one.
