Modern heavy-duty pickups are more capable than ever. Today’s 3/4 and 1-ton-class trucks can tow massive fifth-wheel campers, haul fully loaded trailers, and carry payloads that would have overwhelmed their predecessors. Yet even with increasingly sophisticated chassis engineering, one challenge remains: maintaining ride quality, stability, and control when a truck is operating under serious load.

For nearly three decades, RoadActive Suspension has built its reputation around solving that challenge without relying on air compressors, air lines, electronic controls, or complicated adjustment procedures. Its newest product, the Mega Duty suspension enhancement system, represents the company’s most robust solution yet, specifically engineered for heavy-duty pickups that spend their lives towing, hauling, and working.

The RAS Mega Duty kit ships fully assembled with everything needed for installation, minus the tools. The included instructions lean more to the generic side, so it’s important to read them fully and understand the process before starting the install.

A Different Approach To Suspension Enhancement

Founded in 1998, RoadActive Suspension has carved out a unique niche in the truck suspension market. While many aftermarket suspension upgrades focus on airbags, helper springs, or overload systems, RoadActive developed a patented mechanical suspension enhancement system that works directly with a truck’s existing leaf springs.

The concept is deceptively simple. A heavy-duty tension spring assembly mounts directly to the factory leaf spring pack and applies a calibrated preload. As vehicle load increases, the system actively works with the leaf springs to help maintain their natural arch, reduce axle wrap, improve load carrying characteristics, and enhance overall suspension control.

Unlike airbag systems, there are no compressors to install, air lines to route, or pressures to constantly adjust. Once properly installed and set up, the system remains active at all times and requires virtually no maintenance.

That simplicity has made RoadActive Suspension a popular choice among contractors, RV owners, fleet operators, and truck enthusiasts looking for improved towing and hauling performance without adding complexity to their vehicles.

How involved the installation process is going to be will vary from truck-to-truck. Our ¾-ton Chevy Silverado came equipped with the overload spring below the main pack. This is the best-case scenario for a simple install. Trucks with a top-mounted overload spring will require loosening of the U-bolts and possible disassembly of the leaf pack.

From Heavy Duty To Mega Duty

For years, RoadActive Suspension’s Heavy Duty kit served as the company’s flagship product. Designed primarily for half-ton pickups and light-duty towing applications, it earned a strong following by reducing squat, improving stability, and enhancing ride quality while maintaining near-stock comfort during unloaded driving.

As truck capabilities continued to grow, however, RoadActive began receiving increasing demand from customers operating larger trucks under heavier loads. Fleet operators, commercial contractors, RV owners, and one-ton truck users wanted the same benefits as the Heavy Duty system, but with greater load support and improved performance at the upper end of a truck’s capability.

The result is the Mega Duty system.

Designed specifically for 3/4 and 1-ton-class trucks, the Mega Duty kit features a spring rate approximately 30 percent greater than the company’s Heavy Duty system. That increase allows the suspension to better support heavy payloads, control trailer-induced forces, and reduce suspension movement when operating near maximum capacity.

Rather than simply acting as a load-leveling device, Mega Duty is designed to improve overall suspension behavior under demanding conditions. By helping the factory leaf springs maintain their intended geometry, the system reduces squat, limits body movement, improves stability, and increases resistance to bottoming out without dramatically altering unloaded ride quality.

RoadActive Suspension’s own testing has demonstrated measurable improvements in vehicle dynamics, including reduced suspension fatigue, lower vibration transfer, improved pitch control, and shorter stopping distances when operating under heavy load conditions. While those figures are generated under controlled testing environments, they help illustrate the engineering philosophy behind the system: maintaining control rather than simply increasing spring rate.

Installing the RAS Mega Duty kit is a straightforward affair. With a wheel removed and the system adjusted to approximately the correct length, you simply hook one end around the spring eyelet and the other under the spring at the axle.

Installation: Simple By Design

One of the most appealing aspects of the Mega Duty kit is its straightforward installation process.

Unlike airbag systems that require air plumbing, compressors, switches, wiring, and pressure management, the Mega Duty kit installs using basic hand tools and factory mounting points. The entire system arrives preassembled, minimizing installation time and eliminating much of the guesswork associated with more complicated suspension upgrades.

Installation on our 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD was completed in less than an hour using standard hand tools in a home garage environment. Once mounted, the only required adjustment involved setting the appropriate preload based on the truck’s intended use.

Setting the preload is a similarly simple task. Adjustments are made by tightening the preload tensioner on the spring. Included with the kit are two plastic discs that measure the spacing in between the spring coils in millimeters. They represent either one, two, or a combined three millimeters. The amount of trailer weight (or payload) you haul will determine how much preload is needed. With this set, tightening the locking nuts ensures the preload will stay as set.

Set It And Forget It

After the preload was established, there were no additional adjustments required. No air pressures to monitor. No compressors to maintain. No seasonal tuning. The system truly embodies a “set it and forget it” philosophy.

Real-World Driving Impressions

Before installing the RoadActive Suspension Mega Duty system, our 2022 Silverado 2500HD delivered a ride quality that struck a good balance between comfort and capability during normal day-to-day driving. As expected, however, that balance became increasingly difficult to maintain once substantial weight was added to the truck.

With a loaded gooseneck trailer attached, the rear suspension exhibited noticeable squat and increased suspension movement. Changes in elevation, highway expansion joints, and lane transitions often introduced additional side-to-side motion and vertical oscillations that required the factory suspension to work overtime to maintain control. While the truck remained capable, the added movement translated into increased sway, more rebound, and a generally less composed driving experience under load.

After installing the Mega Duty system, the difference was immediately noticeable.

The first thing we observed was that unloaded ride quality remained largely unchanged. This is an important distinction because many suspension upgrades improve load carrying capability at the expense of everyday comfort. The Mega Duty system managed to avoid that tradeoff.

Once loaded, however, the benefits became obvious.

The rear squat that had previously accompanied trailer hookup was nearly eliminated. More importantly, the truck felt significantly more composed while carrying weight. The rear suspension seemed better able to support both payload and trailer loads without becoming overwhelmed by bumps, dips, or changing road conditions.

Lane changes were noticeably more controlled, with reduced side-to-side movement and improved confidence behind the wheel. Vertical suspension motion was better damped over rough pavement and highway undulations, while larger bumps that previously threatened to push the suspension toward its limits were absorbed with greater control and less drama.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway was the improvement in overall stability. The truck felt more planted, more predictable, and more confident under heavy load conditions. Rather than constantly reacting to suspension movement, the chassis remained settled and composed, allowing the driver to focus on the road rather than managing trailer-induced motion.

One side effect of installing the RAS Mega Duty kit is that it will raise the rear ride height of your truck. How much exactly depends on several factors, including make and model. Our Silverado 2500HD with the RAS kit on the lightest preload gained an inch of height measured in the center of the rear wheel well. (Before on the left and After on the right)

Final Thoughts

The RoadActive Suspension Mega Duty system occupies an interesting position within the heavy-duty suspension market. It is not an airbag system, nor is it a traditional helper spring or overload leaf. Instead, it enhances the performance of the truck’s existing leaf spring suspension through a simple mechanical design that remains active whenever additional support is needed.

For owners of heavy-duty pickups who regularly tow large trailers, haul substantial payloads, or simply want greater stability without introducing the complexity of airbags, Mega Duty offers a compelling solution.

Its greatest strength may be that it delivers meaningful improvements when the truck is working hard while remaining virtually invisible during normal driving. Combined with a straightforward installation process and maintenance-free operation, the result is a suspension upgrade that does exactly what it promises.

After our time with the system, the conclusion is straightforward: the RoadActive Suspension Mega Duty kit improves towing and hauling performance in measurable and noticeable ways without compromising everyday drivability. It is a true set-it-and-forget-it upgrade that is there when you need it, yet never gets in the way when you don’t.
