Hunter RMV (Repurposed Military Vehicles) continues to explore the potential of repurposed military platforms with its latest eye-catching expedition build. Built on a 1998 M1078 Light Medium Tactical Vehicle (LMTV) chassis, this custom overland off-grid adventure rig demonstrates how older military trucks can be transformed into capable, comfortable long-range exploration rigs (while retaining the durability that made them valuable in the first place).

The LMTV platform is widely known for its 2.5-ton payload capacity, 4×4 drivetrain, and exceptional off-road performance. Originally designed for troop and cargo transport in demanding environments, these trucks feature high ground clearance and massive 45-inch tires, making them well-suited for civilian overland conversions.

For this particular build, the customer supplied the M1078 chassis, which Hunter RMV completely refurbished in-house. The restoration included mechanical upgrades, fresh paint, and a fully redesigned living module. The exterior color scheme was inspired by the customer’s home terrain, using a topographical map file as the design reference for the custom 18-foot habitation box.

Powering the LMTV is a Caterpillar 3116 inline six-cylinder diesel engine rated at 225 horsepower and about 520 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with an Allison MD 3070 PT electronically controlled seven-speed automatic transmission. This combination is known for reliability and manageable power delivery, especially in heavy off-road applications. Fuel capacity sits at 116 gallons, allowing the expedition rig to approach 800 miles of driving range. The truck is also equipped with a Central Tire Inflation System, allowing the driver to adjust tire pressure on the fly for improved traction on sand, snow, or loose dirt.

Inside the cab, Hunter RMV upgraded the standard three-seat layout with Scheel Mann leather seating, improving long-distance comfort while maintaining a functional workspace for the driver and passengers. The interior is finished with gray-painted solid-wood cabinetry and butcher-block countertops, creating a durable, practical living space.

The living quarters reflect the company’s reputation for blending rugged construction with residential amenities. Appliances include a propane oven, refrigerator and freezer combination with an additional freezer unit, dishwasher, washer and dryer, and a Wrappon Trekker electric toilet. The amenities are supported by an off-grid power system built around a Victron energy management system, 1,800 amp-hours of lithium battery storage, and 1,000 watts of solar panels.

The Hunter RMV overland truck features both indoor and outdoor showers, providing flexibility based on weather and campsite conditions. The build includes a 100-gallon freshwater system paired with a 40-gallon graywater tank.

Hunter RMV, founded in 2015 by Keith Storey, focuses on transforming military chassis into expedition vehicles capable of reaching remote destinations without sacrificing comfort. The company first gained attention with its M939 6×6-based prototype known as “The Beast,” and has since expanded into LMTV and other platforms. With builds typically ranging from $300,000 to $400,000 (plus chassis cost), the company continues to serve a niche, affluent segment of the diesel and overlanding market that values durability, customization, extended off-grid capability—and curious eyeballs.
