GM Recalls ’21 Full-Size SUVs For Possible Driveshaft Failure

We were so excited to drop the news about the new SUVs coming out from GM and while they are killing it out on the streets, there are some trucks that could face some damage if they aren’t taken care of. In recent news, GM officially recalls some of their ’21 model full-size SUVs for a possible driveshaft failure. If you’re one of the people who own one of these units (listed below) you’ll be seeing something in the mail.

Models Affected:

  • 2021 Cadillac Escalade
  • 2021 Cadillac Escalade ESV
  • 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe
  • 2021 Chevrolet Suburban
  • 2021 GMC Yukon
  • 2021 GMC Yukon XL

Since GM and the National Traffic Highway Safety Administration have issued a product safety recall for certain 2021 model year full-size SUVs over this issue related to the rear wheel driveshaft, GM dealers will be instructed to replace the left and/or right rear driveshaft assemblies in the affected vehicles. These repairs will be covered by the recall and will cost nothing to the vehicle owner.

The Problem

In affected vehicles, the rear wheel driveshaft assemblies may have internal components that were not heat-treated properly during the manufacturing process. More specifically, the supplier of the driveshafts previously informed GM the affected driveshaft units “may have been manufactured with internal steel recirculating balls that were not properly heat treated.” This can possibly result in total driveshaft failure.

The result of this driveshaft failure can lead to a loss of drive power. This could make the vehicle hard to control if the driveshaft fails suddenly, increasing the risk of a crash.
