When folks hear the whistling and the high-revving motors, the smoking exhaust and the raging tires, they know they’re in for a good time. That’s because they’re about to see some more hard-charging action at a National Hot Rod Diesel Association.
Going on right now is the opener for the NHRDA season, the Texas Diesel Nationals, taking place in Ennis, Texas. A handful of people participating in the race are currently sponsored by BD Diesel Performance, and will be giving their all to come out on top of the race.
One of these racers is Chris Perales, who’s piloting a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 with a 5.9-liter Cummins 24V. “This whole truck was built with just me and a couple of friends,” he told us. “It runs 11.2-second passes on fuel only.”
With its fully built transmission, the truck has the guts to take on the competition and put them in their place. The heart of the beast has been pumped up with aftermarket head studs and O-rings, Haley Speed fuel injectors, and a Hamilton camshaft.

And let’s not forget about the support Perales has gotten from BD Diesel. “I’ve been sponsored by BD for about three years now,” he said. “They have supplied me with my turbocharger, intercooler, torque converter, flex plate, and all-billet shafts. They’re solid products, and I like running the single S467 turbo more than my previous setup.”
Perales is feeling pretty good about the event. “I ran my best about a month ago, 11.28 seconds at 121 miles per hour,” he said. “I run in the 10.90 class, so I’m hoping to just beat my competitors on the tree. If I need it, I have a nitrous kit I can run, too.”
We wish Perales and the rest of the BD Diesel racers – Jason Weaver, Colt Carter, Good Cooper, Marcus Tillman, Jim & Amy Greenway, and Verlon Southwick – a great weekend there in Texas, with clean passes and solid power.
