Reader’s Rig: Archie Simms’ OBS F-350 Ford

When we met Archie Simms and his F-350 OBS Ford at the 2023 4-Wheel Jamboree in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, he told us his son was the one who first owned this truck. “My son drove it in high school and he’s 28 years old right now. He owned and drove it for like four or five years and then he decided to sell it.”

That sale meant the truck was headed to Ohio, but Archie’s son sold it with the caveat he would have first chance of buying it if it went up for sale again. The new owner was a younger gentleman who, in Archie’s words, tore it up.

After a couple of years, the truck came up for sale again and the owner was true to his word and reached out to Archies son to let him know. The younger Simms went to Ohio and brought it back home.

“It was in rough shape when it came back,” Archie says. So, the young Simms proceeded to tear it apart with the plan of fixing it up. But sometimes, life gets in the way. “After he tore the truck apart, it sat in the barn for several years,” says Archie. “Finally, I decided it was time to get it back on the road, so I started to redo it.”

Archie told me he has several parts trucks on hand and was able to utilize a lot of rust-free parts during the reassembly process. In fact, he says the cab of the F-350 is about all that is original when it comes to sheetmetal parts.

Once the new/used metal was all in place, it was then covered in OE shades of blue and silver. The new colors are complimented by a set of Mickey Thompson wheels and 315/75-16 all-terrain tires.

Through the years, the 7.3-liter Power Stroke remained in good condition and needed noting to be put back into service. Behind the engine is a five-speed manual transmission.

To some, this might simply look like an old F-350 Ford, but to Archie, it’s so much more.
