There are restored classic Land Rover Defenders, and then there are commissions like this one, named Arvon. Built by Arkansas-based Helderburg as a one-of-one D110 Soft-Top, this truck is more than a classic brought back to life. It’s a carefully engineered, deeply personal diesel build shaped by a family’s story and finished to heirloom standards.
Arvon took more than 3,000 hours to complete. What started as a husband’s surprise gift to celebrate a new home in the Hamptons quickly became a shared vision. He wanted something mechanical and honest, reminiscent of vintage Porsches. She envisioned a calm, beautiful space that fit seamlessly into coastal living. Helderburg’s job was to merge those worlds into a single, unmistakable Defender.

Manual Diesel Performance
Under the finely crafted hood (complete with hand-cut bonnet louvers) sits a 2.8-liter SV Performance turbodiesel, paired with a manual gearbox. For diesel purists, this is where Arvon earns its credibility. The focus wasn’t headline horsepower. It was sustained torque, drivability, longevity, and hands-on fun.
The engine was engineered for strong low-end torque, making it ideal for soft sand, steep approaches, and long stretches of highway between the Hamptons and the mountains. Unlike many gasoline V8 swaps that run hot and thirsty, this turbodiesel delivers efficiency in the high-20s to low-30s mpg range, along with a relaxed powerband that makes the Defender feel composed rather than stressed.
Helderburg also addressed a common coastal weakness: heat. A custom-machined cylinder head and double-stack radiator allow Arvon to idle indefinitely in direct summer sun without temperature creep. That means no anxiety while parked on the dunes with the engine running and the music playing.

Built For Sand, Snow, And All The Elements
Arvon, obviously for cruising, is also engineered for real terrain. Full-time four-wheel drive and robust low-range gearing are complemented by torque-calibrated brakes with enlarged calipers and stainless braided lines. Even in soft sand, the pedal feel remains firm and predictable.
“We built Arvon to be as comfortable on the sun-drenched dunes as it is on a frozen mountain pass,” says founder Paul Potratz. Unlike most soft-top Defenders, this one was designed as a true four-season truck, complete with insulated soft-top materials and an integrated preheat system for cold-weather starts.

A Modern Cabin Designed To Be Used
Inside the High Pearl Metallic Blue Defender, the Sand and Winter White high-wax leathers were chosen for more than their looks. The material naturally resists moisture and UV damage, so wet swimsuits and top-down drives aren’t a liability.
Four inward-facing rear benches turn the back into a social space, perfect for beach runs with friends and family. It feels nostalgic in the best way, yet solid and modern beneath the surface.
Potratz sums it up well: “Arvon represents the highest expression of what happens when you unite heritage engineering with a family’s personal story.”
For diesel enthusiasts, Arvon proves an important point: a classic Defender doesn’t have to be loud or overbuilt to make a statement. With the right components, thoughtful engineering, and a clear vision, it can become something far more meaningful.
