In this day and age where emissions requirements are pretty tight on our diesel trucks, upgrading them in certain states can be a little difficult. AIRAID just announced that they received CARB approval on 37 of their products (upping the total to almost 100 certifications).
What is CARB?
California Air Research Board is an organization that was established in the 1967. According to their website, their “mission is to promote and protect public health, welfare and ecological resources through the effective and efficient reduction of air pollutants, while recognizing and considering the effects on the state’s economy.”
What does that really mean?
Well, in short, the CARB has been one of the leading entities on emissions reduction, especially for automobiles. Traditionally, CARB emissions requirements for California are more stringent than what the EPA sets. Being a leader in the industry, many states adopt CARB’s rules and so there isn’t a single emissions standard across the US. The EPA rules are standard, but it is up to the individual states if they want to add any additional limitations.
What States?
California, Arizona, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rohde Island, Vermont, Wasting and the District of Columbia are all states that enforce the CARB rules.
To modify anything that relates to the engine emissions on a vehicle in one of these states requires what is called an EO number. EO stands for Executive Order.
According to CARB, “Exempted parts are add-on or modified parts that have undergone an ARB engineering evaluation. If the part or modification is shown to not increase vehicle emissions, it is granted an exemption to emission control system anti-tampering laws. This exemption is called an Executive Order (EO) and allows the modification to be installed on specific emission controlled vehicles.”
If you live in one of the above states, then parts with EO numbers are very important to you. In the gas world, this is standard practice and most street products have EO numbers. For diesel, this is extremely new and most companies DO NOT have EO numbers for their parts.
So, when a company like AIRAID announces their parts are EO certified, then they can be offered for sale in these states. Otherwise, most non-EO numbered parts should not be available or shipped into the states.
