As you all know, prior to Project DeadSpool’s big unveil, Project TowBoat had the common trailer connection on the back known as a bumper pull. After multiple trips with too much tongue weight, unsafe weight distribution, and lack of freedom when turning, that’s when we decided it was time to get in touch with B & W Hitches.
With a gooseneck, the truck an carry much more weight with the load centered over the truck axle than it can with the load attached to the back. Secondly, a gooseneck provides more stability and safety due to the fact the weight of the hitch is carried from the middle of the truck bed. The chances of the trailer ever whipping around like a bumper pull are highly unlikely.
After the installation, we needed a new setup. So, the brand new 2018 PJ gooseneck trailer was ready to be put to the test. It was instantaneous on noticing the difference between pulling with the bumper pull versus the gooseneck. With the gooseneck, it offered increased stability, better load transfer, better weight distribution, and enhanced maneuverability.
With us typically entering these events that are packed to the gills with trucks and trailers, it was important to us that we could maneuver around them and find a safe parking spot. Thanks to the gooseneck hitch and trailer, we can virtually do a 360 turn without jackknifing like we risked before. So, the gooseneck gets an A+ in maneuverability.
The better load transfer was a huge improvement over the bumper pull. When towing with the bumper bull, there was so much weight on the back of the truck that it would squat probably to an unsafe amount. Now, with the gooseneck, it’s distributing the weight evenly in the bed which allows for a much safer and less bouncy ride.
With the extra length of the mega cab and the shortness of the bed, it was important to protect the cab from the trailer. While most jackknifing accidents happen with square front car hauler type trailers, we weren’t going to risk it. With the help of our four-inch extender, it put our trailer that much farther away from our cab ensuring it would be safe in sharp turns.
As a matter of fact, the four-inch extender was taken off and replaced with a regular placed straight ball to check the difference in ride. With our trucks design combined with the length and weight of our trailer and race truck, the extender just works better. We noticed that truck was riding much smoother with the extender versus straight. Overall, the extender gets an A+ as well.
So, overall, this turnover system is top notch and is recommended to anyone with interest in towing at all. You will be traveling smoother and safer, and whats better than that?
