Cracks Kill: Meziere Electric Water Pumps Cure Belt Driven Pressure

Just a few short months ago, we did a resurrection on a 5.9-Liter Cummins engine for Project DeadSpool. We put the best parts the industry had to offer inside and they worked flawlessly. One thing we didn’t replace that we wish we would have is the water pump. Thankfully, our new engine will be safe with overwatch of a Meziere Enterprises electric water pump.

New engine, you ask? Yeah, after the rebuild we went out to test/race at the Firepunk Diesel race in Ohio. A small coolant leak was noticed, but we thought it was probably just the front O-ring-sealed freeze plug that didn’t get a good seal. Well, after more testing, the leak got worse. Then, it got so bad that we knew something was wrong. Come to find out, the front of the block was in fact cracked.

With the front of the block cracked, this resulted in a pressurized coolant system. Initially, we suspected a head gasket issue but that wasn’t the case. So, there are many different things that could’ve caused this crack. Is it the 75-PSI of boost we’re throwing at it? Is it the factory water pump turning 5,000-RPM and pressuring the system until it finds a weak spot? It could be multiple things.

So, in an attempt to not have this issue anymore, we’re going away with the factory water pump. This way, no matter the rpm your engine is turning, you will have a static, reliable pressure of coolant/water running through the system. Not only are you providing your engine with a sufficient amount of water/coolant, but you’re also giving yourself an option to circulate the system.

With a drag only application like Project DeadSpool, things get hot. After you’re in the staging lanes, after you make a pass, after you finally make it back to the pits, you’re going to want to cool it off. So, it’s become a habit to just throw the fans on it and let it sit for a while. Yes, this does cool it some but only by 10-15 degrees. Now, with this electric water pump, we can literally turn it on a circulate water through the system as it sits.

This will allow the fans to be cooling the engine down and then circulating the water through it all and result in a cooler temperature. By using the provided -20 AN fittings supplied by Meziere, we can make our connections and plumb the lines to the radiator and the engine.

For me personally, I just feel better that the engine is cooled off. You don’t want to be overheating and continue to be pushed harder, you know? I just translate that into the engine. Let’s cool it off. The Meziere units they offer are a great product. They are trusted in many different applications and they make parts that will radiator mount or remote mount.

No matter the project you’re wanting to fix up, Meziere can fix you right up. For instance, we’re wanting to relocate our radiator to the rear of the truck. Our new Mishimoto radiator will be placed back there behind the cab to distribute weight to the rear as well as just cleaning up the engine bay. By using the -20 AN fittings supplied by Meziere, we can make these connections clean and leak-free.

Stay tuned as we dive more into this product and the installation of it in the very near future. Until then, check out the Meziere Enterprises website and check out the rest of their products and see what best fits your build. Stay tuned to Diesel Army for the latest in diesel performance.
