We all know and love Cummins, the company that gave regular Joes access to cutting-edge diesel technology. The company is practically synonymous with diesel fuel, having been at the forefront of developing diesel engines for decades.
Recently, Cummins published a press release on its website. The press release discussed how “the company is positioned to lead in current and future technologies, including its core business, electrification, alternative fuels and power solutions, as well as in digital capabilities, data, and analytics.”

If you got lost in the jargon for a second there, the key words were “alternative fuels and power solutions,” as well as “electrification.” Put those together, and it spells this – hybrids!
The key part of the release is about halfway down, under the “Electrification” heading. There, we find out that Cummins is due to roll out “electrified powertrain[s]” by 2019. These powertrains will include “battery electric and plug-in hybrids.”
We reached out to Cummins for comment. “Cummins will have a full-production, electrified powertrain system by 2019, and a range-extended electric vehicle by 2020,” said external communications manager Katie Zarich. “This announcement has been tremendously well-received within the company. Our team is excited about what’s next for us.”
Zarich was quick to point out, however, that this announcement did not mean an abandonment of the diesel market. “Diesel will be important for our markets for many years to come, and we are only adding to our technology portfolio. ” she said. “Ultimately, we are committed to bringing our customers the right solutions for their businesses.”
