Hellwig Allows For Safer Towing With New Sway Bars For New Titan

We all know vehicles off the showroom floor have room for improvement and seems that the minimal is done in some areas. Hellwig Products has taken a look at the all-new 2016 Nissan Titan XD and produced two new rear sway bars.

Hellwig offers two sway bars for the Nissan Titan XD. There is an option for factory ride height trucks (PN 7748) (left) and trucks with two to four inches of lift (PN 7847) (right).

The upgraded rear sway bar replaces the existing factory sway bar with a one-inch solid, heat-treated 4140 chromoly steel sway bar with forged ends, and three-way adjustability. The kit for the factory ride height uses the factory end links and the kit for lifted applications include adjustable end links.

The replacement sway bar uses the factory mounting location.

We had a chance to talk to Ben Knaus, director of engineering for Hellwig, and find out what makes these replacement sway bars different than what the factory gives you. “The factory bars are not really designed for towing or a lifted vehicle,” Knaus said. “The manufacturers also tend to design toward an extreme understeer bias and this is thought of as a safety measure, but it’s not the best for handling. The sway bars we make are bigger and stiffer than the factory bar and use better steel. Our bars are forged in a 2,200-degree furnace which makes them more durable.”

The sway bars come powder coated so there is no worry about rust.

Most vehicles come with a factory front sway bar. More and more trucks are coming from the factory with a rear sway bar. Knaus explained to us, “A sway bar by design, is a torsional spring that connects both sides of the suspension together to reduce body roll. While reducing body roll in cornering situations, a sway bar also makes improvements to the overall handling and safety.”

Knaus added, “By adding a rear sway bar, you are evenly distributing the weight to the rear and improving the weight distribution amongst all four tires. This makes for flatter and safer cornering.”

The Hellwig replacement sway bar allows for adjustability with three different end link mounting locations.

One place that vehicles see the most improvement is while towing. “Sway bars are designed to help control vehicles with a large load such as a trailer or when the center of gravity has been altered with a lift,” Knaus said. “By adding a stiffer and larger rear sway bar, weight distribution is greatly improved and allows a vehicle to safely tow large loads. The addition of a rear sway bar help with stability, especially a top heavy vehicle like a truck with a camper.”

It is important to know that you have the correct towing equipment on your vehicle before hitting the open road. For more information on Hellwig’s products check out their website or Facebook page.
