In years past certain parts stores will play commercials where their experts know exactly what year, make, model, engine, carburetor, and even tires that are on the vehicle simply by hearing the sound of a burnout or the engine starting.
So, the guys at Thoroughbred Diesel decided they would test your ears and see how good you are? They put together a short video of 4 trucks starting and idling for a few seconds. They didn’t throw in any curve balls or anything. In fact, they actually narrowed down the field by making all of them Cummins based engines. So grab a group of your buddies and see who knows their stuff and who is pretending!

- 10-12 6.7L Common Rail
While they sound fairly similar, there are distinct differences between each of the generations that should help identify what engine is what. Listen very closely to the cranking and idling. Think about what the engines were equipped with what injection system, which engines are a loud or quiet idle.
We think this is a good challenge and a fun game for a small group. We know some of you can be pretty creative and make this into some sort of drinking game. How about you shops out there, do we hear any hazing? Get it wrong, clean everyone bays or wash everyone’s trucks? Uh, get where we are going with this. Just a fun way to pass some time and take your mind off of work.
