Late Model Duramax Tuning: Banks Power Hitting The L5P World Hard

Banks Power has been around for many many years and is known as one of the best in our industry. With the new release of the L5P Duramax engine and their growing popularity, Banks Power is wanting to hit it head-on and make products available to you that will make your engine perform at the highest level. What is offered for the L5p, you ask? Let’s take a look.

In a recent post on the Banks Facebook page, they’ve teamed up with Strictly Diesel in Phoenix, Arizona to upgrade their Duramax L5P. Using the new Derringer tuner and three iDash 1.8 DataMonsters. With their three gauges, at eight parameters per screen, they can keep an eye on twenty-four different engine parameters making sure this engine is running at tip-top shape.

Each iDash can save up to five custom pages and with three separate units, that is 120 parameters at the touch of a button. The iDash is the most sophisticated data monitoring system on the market for our diesel-powered trucks.

The Banks Derringer results in great power and torque gains across the full operating rpm range from idle to wide open throttle. It is dyno calibrated to use multiple data inputs such as throttle position, rpm, vehicle speed, air fuel ratios, knock and coolant temperature, just like your engines ECU. With six switchable settings, you’re covered no matter the job you’re set out to do.

Level 6 produces best in class performance and sets you back into your seat. Level 3 settings are for the workhorses out there looking for great mid-range power. In level 3, with a loaded truck or a trailer, your acceleration is considerably increased.  The Derringer’s 6 levels offer up to a best of 61-horsepower and 112-lb/ft of torque.

As you can see, these stock units that are covered in their wiring and gadgets because they are still VGT-Variable Geometry Turbocharger-units.

With the additional power the Derringer offers, Banks Power has reached what they’ve found is the limit of their stock Borg Warner turbochargers. Measuring out to a 61-MM inducer and a 62-MM exducer, although beautifully matched, they do reach their limits at the 505-horsepower range. With that being said, you know the guys over at Banks are working on an upgrade.

We can’t wait to see what the god of turbochargers comes up with next. Stay tuned to Diesel Army for the future of the L5P Duramax engines and what they are capable of. For more information about Banks Power and what they offer for your truck, be sure and check out their website.
